AMD A10 7800 or A8 7600, wattage and summer heat

Thread Starter
I currently run an AMD Athlon x2 7750 (circa 2008) rated at 95 watts as well as a Radeon HD 4670. In the summer time, the room where this rig is stored gets really hot, and I can't really afford to crank up the a/c to compensate for it, so for about 3 months each year I underclock and undervolt (IIRC from around 2.7ghz and 1.325v stock to 2ghz and 1.125v, dropping cpu temps from high 50s to low 30s) using amd overdrive. I was actually surprised with how effective this was at reducing room temps, I thought it might be negligible, but it's very noticeable and makes the room temp bearable in summer, so less heat is a priority for my next upgrade.

The A10 7800 and A8 7600 both advertise 45w modes, compared to my 95 watt 7750, and I think the included gpu cores would be an upgrade over my HD4670, so that's another source of heat savings. My hope is that either APU would be a noticeably cooler option stock than my current setup is undervolted, but I'd love to hear any contrary opinions on that.

This is also the first time I've looked at an APU. I recently read that ram speed is vital to integrated graphics performance. Is there anything else I should be wary of when shopping for parts, like the motherboard? Does anyone have a favorite atx value fm2+ motherboard? Do I need any special motherboard feature to be able to switch to the 45 watt mode or will the bios of all fm2+ boards do it?

Finally, I've looked at several reviews and benchmarks make the A8 7600 (~$90) look really close to the a10 7800 (~$130). ~90% of the performance for 70% of the money. And yet I don't see many reviewers taking note of the apparent value proposition there. Is there some reason I shouldn't consider the a8 7600? I do game some, but I'm obviously quite used to turning down settings and resolutions and I'm not that picky about framerates.

Thanks for any comments smile.gif

I´m in the same boat, hot country but I don´t have AC . I´m currently running my 7600 at the 45 TDP limit, shaves about 20w off.
I´m running dedicated graphics so I don´t know if lowering the TDP has any impact on the IGPs performance , I´d imagine so.

The gigabyte boards have been updated , and I think Asrock have updated their bios to support variable TDP .
2133 is the sweet spot for the ram .

The AMD A10-7800 retail APU has pretty good numbers and averaged just 24 Watts at idle and then 86W when running Handbrake with the 65W TDP setting and 67Watts with the 45W TDP setting

7600 vs 7800 power draw

I did´nt see the value in the 7800 either , it is a nice APU and has the benefit of the HD 265 (the 7600 having a HD 260) and slightly higher clock speed, but as you said that comes at a premium for what amounts to about 2 - 5 fps difference.depending on the game.

I'm currently testing out a dual core A6 7400K on an MSI Grenade mATX,with 8GB 1866 RAM. I'm amazed at the performance. Since it's a dual core you can run it overclocked and keep it around 65w total. That's a total of $165 for CPU,mobo and RAM.

Games run great @ 1280x1080p. thumb.gif

Thank you both for the feedback. smile.gif I wasn't sure I'd find anyone of like interests considering where I'm at.
