4790k Direct Die Temps?

Thread Starter
Just got my 4790k and it seems to me these chips are very hot running. However I would have thought it should be running cooler. I delidded as soon as I got it and am running it direct die under my EK Supreme (original) WB, Laingd5, Thermochill PA120.3 and san aces at 5v. At the minute im using Gelid extreme. Also the original EK supreme doesnt have a nake die mount but I made it work by using a bit of foam on each corner and really tightening down.

SO im at 4.7ghz 1.2v , Idle 30-35C
Load is 78 80 78 75

Using IBT to stress and Coretemp for readings.

Hopefully the softwares are playing ball.

However I feel like I should be getting better temperatures, was hoping to go for 5ghz 24/7 as my vcore seems low enough. Im lapping my IHS and am thinking to try CLU on the die and gelid on the IHS but not sure how that would give any better temps.

Thoughts?

This doesnt seem any better than my completely un-touched 4790k @4.8ghz. Im running a Corsair H100i GTX and I see 28-30c idle and under 100% load from the evga CPU burner I barely crack over 70c. And this is no delidding or anything fancy. I'd put that lid back on.

Hmm, Thanks for the info. What is your vcore at 4.8ghz?

When I finish lapping the IHS Im going to put it back on and see what I get, going by what your getting I should have much better temps. My ambient isnt even that much either, probably 17C

I think it was 1.379 under 100% load. That is using adaptive mode in the bios.

A user recently tested my direct-die mounting frame on a German forum.
http://www.hardwareluxx.de/community/f139/kleiner-test-zum-haswell-oc-frame-von-der8auer-1089310.html
Probably can't understand anything because it's german but here's the main difference:

4600 MHz (Delid + CLU)
http://abload.de/image.php?img=vorher80sdf.png

4600 MHz (Direct Die Mount)
http://abload.de/image.php?img=8k4600mhz1150mvyjsrz.png

So average difference should be around 7°C comparing normal delid vs. direct die mount

From what I read in HardwareLuxx forums most users have the best result with CLU between die and IHS + Kryonaut between IHS and cooler

You need to use CLU between the die and the block.
If that doesn't work, I'd put the heatspreader back on with CLU like you said.

Ive read that CLU between the Die and Block isnt as good as a normal thermal paste. I know CLU between ihs and die is the best though. Also ive only got enough for one more application me thinks, So will try to use it between ihs and die, trying to lap the thing today in my free time. Will update.
