GTX 970 vs GTX 980

Thread Starter
I have a Gigabyte G1 Gaming GTX 970 since Oct 6 2014 and it is a fantastic graphics card, I was just able to get a PNY GTX 980 reference graphics card Sept 25th, it too is a fantastic graphics card.
that being said why does it feel like to me that the 970 performs just as good as the 980 while gaming? the 980 gets way better benchmark scores but for gaming it doesn't seem any better than the 970.
I game at 2560x1080 60hz on only 1 of my 2 monitors, my other monitor runs other important programs.
I can crank the settings up all the way to maximum with both gpu's and the 970 keeps right up with the 980, even with vram as like i said i use 1080 60hz

because they actually perform about the same. im sure that benchmarks take avantage of the extra 500mb of vram and that probably inflates the scores but they are pretty much the same for gaming at anything under 1440p.

You won't be able to "feel" the difference while gaming from 1 tier to the next. Its something like 3 tiers before you feel the difference.

From 670/960 to 980 you would feel a difference.

even though the 980 specs are higher? such as amount of cuda cores etc? I'm not an expert on cuda cores and other specs, I just look at core clock and amount of vram.
also every gpu I have every bought was the higher end model such as I bought the GTX 295, 2 GTX 580's 2 GTX 680's 1 GTX 780, I bought the GTX 970 due to at the time did not have the money for a GTX 980.

It really depends on the game and the video settings of each game. At 1080 at 60Hz the 970 isn't going to hit its cap so you wont notice any difference between the two. Its when the game settings require more than the 970 can handle that you will notice the 980 perform better.

yeah that makes sense, I didn't think about it that way. I will say I am happy with the 980 and it over clocks great for a reference card with stock bios, and I got it a very very good price.

I guess for some reason in the back of my mind I thought my games would look better, they do look great with both the 970 and 980,
but like you said at 1080 and 60hz neither gpu is being pushed very hard. so I guess it's just the benchmarks that will show the difference for me.

Even then, isn't the difference between a 970/980 only about 10-15%?

Yeah, I'd say more like 15-20%. I bought SLI 970s to play in 4k, but I couldnt deal with most games being limited to 30fps. So I'm overkilling the heck out of every game I play at 1080 x 60fps. I hope to not have to upgrade for 2-4 yrs., especially if they work well with DX12.
