These are liquid ports carry cooling water to specially designed passages etched into the backs of FPGA devices to provide more effective cooling. The liquid cooling provides a significant advantage in computing throughput.

Using microfluidic passages cut directly into the backsides of production field-programmable gate array (FPGA) devices, Georgia Institute of Technology researchers are putting liquid cooling right where it's needed the most -- a few hundred microns away from where the transistors are operating.

Combined with connection technology that operates through structures in the cooling passages, the new technologies could allow development of denser and more powerful integrated electronic systems that would no longer require heat sinks or cooling fans on top of the integrated circuits. Working with popular 28-nanometer FPGA devices made by Altera Corp., the researchers have demonstrated a monolithically-cooled chip that can operate at temperatures more than 60 percent below those of similar air-cooled chips.

However, the same technology could also be used to cool CPUs, GPUs and other devices such as power amplifiers, Bakir said.

I think I just had an eargasm. Liquid cooled amplifiers? Now we're talking. thumb.gif

Thought this was already in the works.

Come to think of it, why is this not commercialized yet?

So I'm not well versed in this yet but how does algae grow in the chemical solution?

Even if it's not algae, mineral buildup clogging channels would create hot spots, I'd hope these chips are cheap enough to throw away after 5 years... Wait, maybe that's their plan to keep you buying every few years...

most of the water enthusiasts on the site now run either distilled water and an inhibitor or distilled water and silver coil + anti-corrosion depending on their loop. Haven't seen grow of any kind in my loop (yet ) tongue.gif

Interesting, although probably the claim of saving space seems to be situational. I find it hard to believe that they can make a water-cooled device smaller than equivalent air cooled device with the addition of pump and tubing to the system - but I do see there some advantages to that approach. In the end they need to dissipate that heat somehow and that takes some surface area and airflow regardless how its done. But transporting heat away right away into somewhere else to dissipate it is the thing.

Compared to passive cooling? Usually for these low power chips you go without fans to remove a point of failure right? Adding a water loop and pump won't improve reliability.

Never mind, these are high power chips using this form factor.
