[The Verge] Microsoft Surface Book - Page 12

Too expensive frown.gif

I like the concept but these prices are getting a little crazy. Starting at $1500 for the most basic model is a hard pill to swallow.

I think I might hold off until next year to upgrade my laptop. I want 4K for photo applications and the Book is just shy of that goal, hopefully next year they're going to fill out those last few Megapixels.
If Dell were actually selling their 4K model I might have bought one already, but the form factor and battery life of the Book are very appealing.

Also, I note a lack of USB-C and with the 5K/4K120hz compatible Displayport 1.3 is just around the corner I can't help but think version 2 will have some significant feature improvements.
And maybe we'll see 5K laptops, which would probably convince me to jump back to the 5lb+ large laptop format.

Good product but horrendous pricing.

Considering microsoft wants more expansion and marketshare for their products, they should really cut down the price.

200 dollars cheaper for their base option and about 300 dollars cheaper for every option above this beside the 512tb which needs a $400-500 price drop.

With the samsung m2 512gb being 300 dollars at places like newegg, charging 800 dollars vs the 128gb base option is criminal. Even apple doesn't charge this ridiculous price.

This laptop reminds me what Sony's Vaio Z is. Packing macbook pro power into a macbook air like form factor. Match up the canvas z and this laptop and the similarities are very high. Both are convertables with pen, with the vaio z canvas having the more powerful processor. A true quadcore vs the likely dualcore. Albeit, the higher end configs of the surfacebook should have more GPU power.

With this taken into account, the pricing is almost identical. Which is a problem.

The sony is a niche product made in japan and made out of carbon fiber. It was never intended to be mass market and is priced high because of its at the low end for economies of scale, niche and is made in japan.

The surfacebook looks to be a macbook pro competitor but is priced 300-500 dollars more expensive than one. Sure it includes a pen, but the extra features of the surface are what allow it to compete with the apple brand.

The ceiling people are willing to pay for products is what apple charges for mainstream consumption. Heck apple can charge too much and fail as the first itteration of the macbook air showed. Considering that 128gb of storage is garbage which makes the 256gb option mandatory, this is priced as high as a macbook air gen 1.

And to charge this price, you need to be apple or better than apple. What this means is the surfacebook needs to be priced at the macbook pro level and it's extra features like the touchscreen and stylus are thrown in for free so people have an incentive for picking this over a macbook pro. At equal pricing and features, people pick the macbook. Not a big apple fan, but I know Apple has a strong hold on the 1000 dollars and up market.

This product at this price point is destined to fail at this price. What this means is no one should buy the laptop at this price. Either wait for price drops which are inevitable or wait for gen 2.

Not really the 13" macbook pro is the same priced as any Windows laptop in the same BUILD. I still use a Windows desktop but Apple won me over with the laptops they produce. I could care less about gaming on a laptop, I want something with great battery life and great looks. I hate plastic laptops. If I was spending 2000+ grand on a laptop it would be another Macbook. I am the type of person who doesn't want to touch my screen. I can use my Wacom tablet for anything I want to do as far as a stylus goes and far more precise. Ultimately I don't want to buy a "Gaming" laptop in order to have my same performance as my Macbook.

That would be a reasonable assumption, except haven't they held firm on the SP3 prices until VERY recently, when they started trying to clear the stock in advance of the SP4 release? I feel like MS is trying to discourage people from waiting for the price to drop by simply NOT dropping the price.

So can it run Crysis?

All the people complaining about the price must be buying the cheap stuff at best buy shelves if they think the product is grandiosely overpriced. Add up the cost of the components and machining the tech, they aren't priced that bad.

Yep... but Microsoft is famous for NOT doing that. That's exactly why we have Blu-Ray today instead of HD-DVD. And it's why Sony rules the console space while Xbox plays eternal catchup. It's not that Microsoft's products aren't superior (or at least equal), it's that Sony, Apple, etc are more willing to bend on pricing in order to gain marketshare. Microsoft doesn't seem to have learned that rule yet. Still.

Lol .... Sony and Apple bend in price.... You learn something new everyday. Sony was the premium standard. Apple is the premium now hence they can make more expensive products.

Sure, but ask yourself how they got there... it wasn't always so.

Look back just a few years to the Blu-Ray vs HD-DVD war. How did Blu-Ray win? Because Sony put a Blu-Ray player in every PS3 *free of charge* and ate huge losses on the hardware (check the financials circa 2008). Flash forward 7 years, and today their profits are huge, and both Blu-Ray and Playstation are the industry standards. But they got there by UNDER-pricing their hardware while they brought the public on-board.

IMHO, Microsoft would be well advised to follow that path. Offer a product that's on par with or better than Apple *at a lower price* than Apple, eat the loss for a year or two, then reap the reward in the next generation when everybody and their brother has already bought into the Surface ecosystem hook-line-and-sinker.
