Someone on reddit managed to run GPU-Z on a dgpu Surface Book. These are its specs: 384 pipelines, 40GB/s bus width, 64bit bus, 954Mhz core clock. From that info it seems it is a bit more powerful than the 940m, but below a 950m.

That puts a bit of a damper on the dgpu Book for me since I was hoping for a 950m or higher.

Notebookcheck says the Iris 540 is a bit better than a 920m, which is usually within 20-40% of a 940m. So not an amazing jump from the i7 SP4 to the Book dgpu. Though the Book may have a larger performance difference in real world use, as the Book might throttle less as the gpu and cpu are separated and have separate cooling, whereas the i7 SP4 will have both combined and sharing a cooler

That is the point. This Nvidia GPU will run at full speed while the Intel build in GPU will be Thermally limited and Power Limited. If for example you use Intel GPU + CPU @ 100% for application then 15W TDP will downclock the CPU and GPU. If the program is going to use Nvidia GPU + Intel CPU then you will get 3-4x better performance even though in paper it should be like 2x Max.

That will depends whether it will actually be compatible for future upgrades.
If they will always sell tablet+dock and not just the dock, to get a better dock in the future, will require you to pay for the whole surface book.

I mean, why sell you a better dock, when they can force you to pay 3200$ for a whole book?

Here's the first thorough hands-on review I've come across: http://www.engadget.com/2015/10/21/surface-book-review/
  • "the Surface Book comes in at 3.34 pounds, or 3.48 with a dedicated GPU"
  • "though I never worried the screen would suddenly detach, it wobbles a bit in laptop mode, especially when you tap at the touchscreen."
  • "it's hard not to feel awed by what Microsoft's done here: cram a fully functioning Core i7 computer into a slab weighing just 1.6 pounds and measuring 7.7mm (0.3 inch). I'd even go so far as to say that the Surface Book does a better job doubling as a tablet than the Surface Pro does as a laptop. Again, though, the question of which you should buy ultimately comes down to what sort of device you'll use most."
  • "Maybe it was the relatively modest 1GB of VRAM, or maybe this just isn't the best GPU NVIDIA has to offer, but in Sky Driver's gaming simulations, titles ran at an average of around 30 frames per second."

Still unclear what exactly "GeForce graphics" refers to, but that 30fps 6,191 score in Sky Diver seems to indicate the low end of the spectrum.... 940m maybe? So, definitely not a "gaming" laptop, but maybe more competent in photo/video editing than a intel igp.

The more I read, the more I'm leaning toward the Surface Pro 4 over the Surface Book. It's seeming like maybe this 1st gen is an impressive, but not quite mature proof of concept.

Form some videos in Youtube the CPU gets hot and fan gets loud and load. Just like SP3. Very typical for these very slim devices. Just dont go on buying one of these thinking you get the clock speeds and performance of these Core i5/i7. Go in knowing you will get 50%.

looks like its a more affordable macbook pro basically (thin/light), works for me, I don't want to relearn a new OS.

Also, I doubt the 12hr battery life is actually real world usage though. Probably sat there idle the entire time without being used.

According to a couple of reviews, the base model gets nearly 14 hours on just video playback.
