[HardOCP] R9 Fury X Crossfire vs GTX 980 Ti SLI vs Titan X SLI @ 4K Resolution - Page 8

In all seriousness though it's part of why I dropped 7970 CF for 780 SLI... it wasn't as bad as some people were claiming but it was a hassle and eventually it just gets old troubleshooting things when all you want to do is sit down and play games.

Exactly.

I love making custom cases, overclocking, water cooling, and gaming. I also ride motorcycles, work on my hotrod, travel, do off shore boating, and do charity work.

When I want to play a game, I don't want to have to wait 6 months for AMD to get off their butt and come up with a CrossFire profile or work out an issue, I want to PLAY. My time is limited.

I used to be a die hard ATI/AMD fan (both video cards and CPUs) and I STILL own AMD products and use them every day. But honestly, I have a LOT less troubles with nVidia and Intel than AMD ... by a long margin.

I'm lucky because I don't really have to worry about money. Yeah, AMD products USUALLY (but not always) are less expensive ... that is until you factor in the cost of your own time. The older I get, the less willing I am willing to wait for a driver or a fix to something that the competition had done months (and in some case ... read DirectX 9 stuttering with multiple cards) YEARS ago.

Like I said (and what HardOCP said), when CrossFire works, it works BETTER than nVidia SLI, when it doesn't (or if you use it in non-full screen mode), it is garbage.

I am not going to put a lot of stock in this "promo review", as it is peppered with subjective observations, lacking comparable in game settings between cards, and includes some games that suffer in sli from my own experience (I.e, Farcry4 and Witcher3). I can't jump to the "smooth as butter sli experience" vs " Cfx is a stutterfest" conclusion, simply because I do know, based on my experience, that SLI has issues ( no, all is not well, contrary to what this review would have us believe... It's not terrible, but not is it a "smooth" experience without struggling to figure out some sli hacks and tricks for some games. tongue.gif. ). that need to addressed, particularly for some specific games tested here (I haven't played pcars, battlefield, so can't comment on it...).

As I don't have a Cfx setup, I can't speak to it, but the lack of quantifiable testing for sli and Cfx cofigutations , coupled with my own sli experience, leads me to judge this reviews' commentary on Cfx and sli as rather inadequate, at best. The review is a reasonable effort on the reviewer's part, but far from an objective professional review, IMHO.

[H] doesn't do objective, professional reviews of graphics cards. Hasn't done so for a LONG time. Just unsubstantiated subjective analysis. Their commentary on multi-GPU setups has always been particularly bad in this regard.

I love OCN sometimes (ok, less and less anymore).

It amazes me when people will sit here and quote HardOCP reviews left and right when they say exactly what they are supporting a card, but as soon as someone uses the exact same site (and in this case, the same review) and how it isn't all "OMG, this card rocks!", then suddenly HardOCP isn't objective and the review is garbage.

Yeah, in this case it's about AMD this time, but let's face it, the same thing happens with nVidia reviews too.

And what do we get ... we get a thread that ultimately turns into a war zone and infractions are handed out and people get butt hurt. Honestly, I think OCN should just cut their losses and outlaw any discussion of AMD, nVidia, or Intel. When a news story from another place happens, you are allowed to link to it, then the thread is locked. It really would make this place much friendlier.

Provide the news, but don't allow commentary. Or if you are going to allow commentary, then ALLOW it.

My 2 cents.

Appreciate the backdrop on this, as I am not too familiar with H.
Would love to see some sli frametime variance analysis for some of these games for my own selfish reasons (since my set up as a sli set up) ... Lol

Personally speaking, I will care about cfx, if I ever get into that configuration, but right now, I would very much like NV to focus on better sli drivers, and of course scaling. But, but I do realize that the scaling puzzle may not be solved until Nvlink goes consumer mainstream....

Also, for those hating on HardOCP and loving on PCPer ... please note something. If you go to PCPers graphics card section, you will notice that a LOT of their news stories are FROM HardOCP.

http://www.pcper.com/subject/graphics-cards

Stories 4 and 8 on page 1.
Story 1 on page 3.
Etc.

So if HardOCP is so biased and garbage, why would PCPer, who is very technically savvy, quote them so often?

BTW, nVidia just updated their drivers today for the Star Wars Battle Front game. AMD hasn't. Fact of the matter is, nVidia does a lot more work on their SLI drivers than AMD, so I think you are confused.

You may be right though, I'm sure that nVidia is focusing more on NVLink than SLI to deal with the scaling. I haven't heard anything that AMD is planning to counter this. Heck, AMD still has yet to fix their driver for Crossfire in DX9 and the stuttering issue. It's only been known about for over 2 years now. They did manage to fix it for DX 11 and 10 though ... after denying things to no end, until PCPer PROVED there was a problem.

And yes, plenty of people still play penty of games with DX9 ... infinitely more than people play DX12.

C'mon Knucklehead! Sometimes these threads are better than a comedy show! At times I literally make popcorn before I open and read one of these threads!
True, it does get out of hand sometimes, but then again ^ ...it's when the good times roll in, as long as you're just an observer! biggrin.gif

True, but some people can't keep up the "entertainment factor" for everyone forever. wink.gif

I was curious about that so I went and read the latest release notes (Beta release 9/30/2015)

This is exactly the kind of thing that has kept me from changing back to AMD, and the exact type of thing that you can't just look at a chart for.... Although.... It would take a lot of research, but I think a chart comparing game release date vs optimized driver release date would be interesting.

Maybe it just seems skewed to some of us simply because of the games we play. Who knows, maybe Nvidia is only faster on the game I like so it seems better than it really is.

Unsure if this is directed at me or not, but in case it was - I've been a pretty harsh critic of nearly everything [H] has done for about 4 years as far as reviews. I am not a fan, and do not understand why the site is so well respected.
