"he wrote us letters in 90s, that we are stealing his ideas, just because we also make a space game. by the time he released his battlecruiser 3000, I already shipped 4 wing commander games"

Derek Smart basically argues that with 300 employees, payed over 5 years they must have run out of money in 5 years, while completely ignoring the fact that in first year they had only 20 employees, in 2nd 70, in third 170 and in 4th 270. so his claims are irational, and the math means they have money for another 2-3 years

then he has his own new game he wasnt able to finish in 5 years, and doesnt do refunds on it, yet with his past history people fear he might try to steal star citizen and then say, well it couldnt have been done, so he cancels it and steals/sells whatever was produced. sounds ludicrous? well he did it already once. there was another game, where they called him in as consultant, so he played the corp behind it and pushed out the people making the game, taking it over and then not finishing it.

in his letter to CIG he writes that if takes over star citizen, he will keep erin roberts as he has good enough experience to remain. read this, he would need a patsy to put the blame, after his glorious eminence himself wont be able to finish it.

now cig clearly knows that this guy suffers from delusions of grandure, and what he did in past, so they are onto him, and just setting their ducks into row before they take legal action
its clear that he was behind the escapist piece, as he is aquantaince of escapist editor in chief, was a member of some panel on journalist integrity regarding gamergame, as a developer, panel organized by escapist people among other, and he was taunting cig with emails about the incoming escapist article, before it was even published. how would he knew about the article?

make out of it what you want, but if mittani head of goons himself did not publish any article after escapist hit piece, and they like to hit upon Star Citizen, it does tell you that all those accusations are without merit. and the above should perfectly describe what a person derek smart is.

This sounds like conspiracy theory nonsense. Can you name the company and game he took over?

In an effort to enhance Alganon’s® market visibility and following the direction of certain investors, QOL hired Derek Smart as a consultant on December 3, 2009 to assist in the area of sales and marketing. Soon thereafter, and for reasons unbeknownst to me, Mr. Smart began a smear campaign attacking my credibility, first privately among the investors, and then publicly. As many have read on various Internet websites, Mr. Smart has made disparaging remarks concerning my professional work and comments that could lead others to question my loyalty, honesty, and ability to successfully create, build, run, and manage a multi-million dollar MMOG development company;

and since they both had common sense, they realized that he was the fraud and started publickly mocking him, even having heard of SC first time from DS himself.

its actually sad. its like a bully is trying to play with the cool kids, but they see through him and start mocking him

in addition to this german gaming press known for their love for space genre, yet also known for being precise as germans, tried to play derek smarts own game. well it did not end well

DS refuted their review saying, that they did not have installed the proper graphic driver for their language version of windows tongue.gif
he must trully be an insider, i mean he knows that there are differeng gpu drivers for different languages, ou wait there are not
all being said, something tells me DS is absolutely not the person to finish Star Citizen

The stuff coming out of Derek Smart's mouth/keyboard has sounded like conspiracy theory nonsense for over 15 years. Most long standing space sim fans have long learned to ignore anything he says as self serving fiction.

What's why this is funny. Smart should just say "Listen, Roberts is just like me!".

As-is the engine is overflowing with never before implemented technology. The millions of miles across playable area and multiple physics grids are some of the best examples. The damage system looks like almost everything I could dream of when I was a kid and as soon as we're allowed to run around a player owned Idris people are probably going to freak out.

Do we have any guarantee of seeing a finished product or being satisfied with progress? No.
That's why I keep comparing this to a charitable event. If you're not comfortable spending money in the hope that the world will be a better place tomorrow, then don't. We have no guarantees and I'm certainly not going to recommend that anyone become financially invested in something that's ultimately a really extravagant time waster, unless they really want to.
Although the scale is bigger in SC, the whole universe-thing is comparable to the X series in my opinion.

We had no guarantees, but I think he's not following the plan he outlined when I backed the project back in 2012. The beta was to be released (quote) "20-22 months in". We're 1 year later, and no sign of a beta, we've been said a 2.0 alpha is coming out. Forget those expensive actors, forget the FPS, focus on the game, and then, iff there's money, go to the extra content (that's what Egosoft did for the X games, and worked very well).

Good post.

To add something to Line of Defense (the game from DS):

It is Early Acess on steam and has 99 negative reviews and 21 positive reviews. Some of the positive ones are troll reviews or have less than 3 hours game time. Means ~95% negative reviews.
People are saying DS banns negative posts in his forum and insults them. Not even helping anyone with issues. No serious bug fixing.

Gamestar said 27.07.2015 in their article DS has released 31 patches for this game between september 2014 and this date. And as a result the game is still unplayable or has ridiculous bugs, performance issues and no content at all? Its not the only source with the same conclucion.
As it seems the system requirements are not true. There are no Servers in the EU and if DS says the Gamestar review is invalid due to different windows version I have to ask why is this game avaliable on steam in europe?

So many many many issues and the game is still on steam. Early Acess is the only protection and Line of Defense will always be early acess. Otherwise DS has to justify so many things.

If you ask me THIS is a great example of vaporware and a cashgrab.

Star Citizen is none of this so far because we have seen already gameplay from it which works.
And hey we have Arena Commander! It acutally works! Oh yes it has bugs but oh hey they are working on it! Increadable.
Arena Commander is working already better than Line of Defense with 5 years of developement? Of course Derek Smart is going crazy!

The key point between Star Citizen and all the other games to date is that you can EVA and have extremely detailed environmental interactions at any point on a scale the size of a small solar system (ok, 1AU=149 million kilometers, so if they've got "a few million kilometers" it's at least approaching astronomical values).

Meanwhile, X-Rebirth has trouble making instanced space stations interesting https://forums.frontier.co.uk/archive/index.php/t-26801.html
Compared to that just walking around your hangar in Star Citizen is amazing, and the Social module is actually working, you can run around with other people too. There is no "single player" or "multi-player" the engine can put multiple people in the same game space at any point. It's all seamless (though it sounds like Squadron 42 will have limitations for story reasons, but all the flight missions are planned to be co-op).
The next best game I can think of, Space Engineers, the ship usually kills you if you're not sitting down while someone else is flying it (at least that was my experience a few years ago, hopefully things are better now).
Speaking of games locked in perpetual development... Star Citizen is progressing quite nicely.

Thanks for that link, I never got the chance to test Rebirth since it got pretty negative opinions when it was released (perhaps they fixed most for v 2.0 ...). SC beats in scale, detail and integration the X series, which I would expect given that huge budget. I hope everything works altogether.
