Well... it depends on if they're at real 4.7 or illusory 4.7.

One can definitely go higher with the UD3P 2.0 if one turns on the power-saving stuff. But it locks down multicore performance dramatically.

I have just experimented with turbo overclocking and even voltage doesn't seem to help a lot in getting better than 76 GFLOPS in LinX (2048 size) — at 4.7 — versus 87 at 4.5 with high-performance mode on. Cinebench multi drops to around 686 or something while I get like 705 with 4.5 high-performance mode.

The board can go higher if one cheats by nerfing the multicore performance. Maybe there's something I'm missing but as soon as all the special stuff is turned on like APM and C states there seems to be a specific wall put in place that stops performance (around 76 GFLOPs in LinX). Normally 4.7 gets like 91 FLOPS or something as I recall. I tried 4.48 GHz with turbo set to 5.1 GHz even. I tried 4.6 GHz with 5 GHz turbo. I tried 4.7 with 5 GHz turbo. I tried 4.5 with 5 GHz turbo. All of these, as I recall, yield 76 FLOPS in Linx, regardless of voltage. I got less throttling cores at 4.5 with turbo overclocking with a much higher voltage than 4.5 needs with just HPM but the multicore performance is still the pits.

It's possible to increase the single thread score with turbo overclocking but I can't seem to find any way to get the multicore performance even to 4.5 GHz (HPM) levels.

So, if people aren't using Prime with demanding settings and only high-performance mode it's easy to get past 4.5. But even with a 140mm fan blowing directly onto my VRMs, an 80mm fan blowing onto the northbridge, a 140mm fan behind the socket, a 360mm EK radiator at medium fan speed (Vardar, two set to push, one set to pull) and no GPU attached to the loop, a 200mm intake fan, a 200mm fan jury-rigged to blow air to the GPU and the northbridge/RAM, and the drive bays removed... I can't get past 4.5 with comfortable temps when priming. I'm pretty much stuck where I was with air! The VRM temps are better and the CPU temps are better but trying to get 4.7 is still not possible. I was up to 60.5 quickly enough with Prime and I don't want that high of a CPU temp. Even 4.6 is surprisingly hard to achieve. rolleyes.gif

That why i stopped using prime.

Gaming will do enough for me and cinebench

Alright, I just picked up an 8320e bundled with the 990FXA-UD3 rev 4.1. This board seems to have the strongest following for the price and reviews quite well. Too early IMO for the R5 version for me to use.

The board is on sale for $119 then $40 off that with the CPU bundle.

I figure at 4.5+ this is a solid setup for sub $200.

I'll update this thread or perhaps just make another with the complete build and OC results. I'll let you guys choose.

Thanks as always for everything!

Anyone with experience overclocking on a 990FXA UD3 rev 4.1? Perhaps I have a dud on a 8320e? Needs nearly 1.5 to hit 4.4 seems absurd to me.
Wow. Something is wrong if it takes that much for an E-type. My UD3 rev3 could take my early 8350 to 4.5 at 1.4v. Of course at that level the VRMs were so hot they were practically glowing.

yes the e chips clock great and low voltage up to around 4.5 something's not right...post screenshots of your settings in the bios please

Something is funky with this 990FXA UD3 Rev 4.1. I've dropped in an 8320e, 8350, and a 6300. All three needed stupid vcore to get anything stable near 4.3-4.4. I happen to have a 990FX killer NIB on hand so I thought I'd give this thing a go. I'm familiar with it to be fair, but its vdroop is quite nasty. Yet, I type right now using the Killer and the Fx 6300 chilling at 4.5 and a measly 1.32 at load. P95 as I type in the 30's. 32c at this moment. Now I'm certainly not claiming stability, but the Giga wouldn't even get into windows with these settings.

Funny thing is, the NB heatsink on the Killer I can cook food on, and it doesn't care. The Giga however, I could have my 3 year old touch the board anywhere and not burn her finger. Yet the Temps on the package were in the 70's due to the 1.45+ needed to even think about 4.5ghz.

I've gone over all voltages for every setting and there the same for both boards.

I don't get it...redface.gif

I will probably take it back tomorrow. But revision 4.1 is the oldest model they have on their shelves.

So far this 990fx killer may just be the one. I'm stressed testing the living daylights out of it tonight so we'll see how it goes by tomorrow evening.

What CPU cooler are you using?
