Back in the good days they looked like this:

Ain't no lies there!

Got a 2P server board here that is just straight ugly to the eye. But for it's time, running a quad was great fun. s940 (not AM2) Oh the good old days.

My DFI LanParty UV is a nice looking board under the black light though. Clocks decently too!

Honestly, I don't like the red and black of my CHvZ. Since my case is too my left, All I see is a nice solid big black side panel of my TJ07 case biggrin.gif

I think I still have the AMD Xpress 3200 board (Sturgeon) somewhere.
The Pure (white) board from Sapphire was closely based on that. Even the color was copied.

I have to agree with the lack of polish comparing the UD7 rev3.0 to the ROG Asus boards. Not even close, my UD7 is not a very fun experience. Maybe it is just my familiarity with the Asus bios compared to Gigabyte.

I have an Asrock 990fxa fatality in the box for a Christmas present build I have going for my nephew. I did an Asrock 970 and I was less than impressed. It now houses a 45W sempron in my NAS build where it is solid.

I agonized over choosing the UD7 vs the CHVZ, I went with the UD7 as I had four homeless 6GB 280X's that I needed to house.

the fatality isn't bad for a low to medium overclock I've got an 8320 @ 4.6 1.45v with a phanteks 12pe cooler doesn't miss a beat...it does need the socket and vrm fans to keep temps down

The only AM3+ motherboards I would ever run with the 8 cores are as following

Asus Sabertooth
Asus Crosshair V Formula Z
Asus Crosshair V
Gigabyte UD3, UD5, UD7
Asrock Extreme 9, or Extreme 6

There are a few others, but my list stops there and they are in no particular order. I've used all of these boards and had little issues with overclocking. I currently use the extreme 9 in my personal computer, and I've been very happy with it.

People have listed cons regarding the 970 fatality, are the same issues there for the 990?

Doesn't much matter, he will probably push it to the point of exploding and get another processor. Good for learning, he is 11 years old. I will cool the cpu with an h110. I am giving him a sapphire HD 7950 and a psu. I have an extra Lepa 1600W and a platimax 1350W. I think I may keep the platimax and give him the Lepa. A 480gb Intel 730 series to top it off.

Reference mobo, right?

Fun days, 939 will always be special to me.

990 is a little better... the problem with them is vdroop so you end up vcore limited... and you got to keep the vrms cool or it will let the magic smoke out... the asrock boards seems to have higher socket temps and a lot of the other so socket fan and vrm fan is needed.. especially with water cooled cpu because no airflow over the vrms...h110 should keep it cool for all the voltage the board has as an option it goes to 1.55v but with vdroop i could just barely get 1.46 with an offset... another thing to note.. offsets seem to create a ton more heat on this board than any other board ive ran an offset on...is this the killer fatality or the fatality pro? the pro board is a little bit better and has LLC which can account for the droop the killer board (for sure) and the non pro i dont think have LLC at all... my board had .14 droop .07 from bios setting to base vcore in windows.. and another .07 droop under full loads.... so it was predictable but limited the overclock a lot... BUT its probably for the better because the power delivery isnt the best on any of them...also if im remember right the pro boards llc is backwards from most llcs as it uses percentages....needless to say unless he gets a really good chip he wont be breaking 4.8 anytime soon.... this is more likely on the pro than the killer though.... the simple fact of llc to regulate the voltage droop better might give him a better chance of clocking higher...afaik there isnt a way to remove the 1.55 voltage block...but on the pro version LLC might allow you to actually keep it at 1.55 without using an offset..

which cpu were you going to drop in it? some of the newer batches might allow for higher clocks at lower voltages giving the headroom...best of luck to you guys with this one... i had 560mm of rad space cooling just the cpu and it was maxing out around 65c trying to run offsets to get 4.8 stable.. but with the phanteks cooler and the +50mv offset it does alright and stays around 60c during stress.. with a few spikes above... but if you are using an 8 series chip the max is 70c so no worries there...the board will be your limiting factor on the overclock
