I don't think there is any noticeable difference in accidents when it is raining where I live, it's the snow that brings out the destruction derby lol.

I'm just thinking that anything foreign which is covering the sensors would throw the car way off. Dirt, mud, dust, water, snow... It's not like these sensors have windshield wipers...

The problem is not limited to hijackers. There's also the risk of attacks on the person inside the car (whether it be a personal grudge, race-motivated attack (these things do happen, especially with certain people on all sides who actively encourage it), or whatever) or to steal whatever is inside.

ccRicers: While manual override can certainly help, it can also waste precious time if you have to switch automated driving off first. I also feel it goes against what the companies are trying to do in the first place by putting control of the car back into the driver's hands.

I feel, respectfully, that your argument might be a little too fear-based. You might be asking a little too much of a car to become your personal security system.

I'm actually on the side of retaining as much user control as you are. But I think that, in order to further this position one has to delve too deeply into the societal complexities surrounding such a thing being mandated. As it is now, we have both types of operation, and it will require a shift in culture to change that. The scale of which, is beyond the ability of the technology to do on it's own.

These things can and do happen in some countries. In fact my aunt got attacked in that exact way when she went to a local dump site. Luckily she took some workers along, and they immediately jumped at the attackers and told her to get away. I'm just saying that I don't trust a computer to take those things into consideration.

When it comes to technology I can see the value in ABS, traction control, etc but I don't want a computer to take control of the steering, throttle and brakes in that way.

Oh I know. Near where I live, there's quite a few back streets you really shouldn't go down if you don't live there. One assailant sees you pass their house and calls their friend at the other end of the street to box you in.

But see, they do this maneuver with their vehicles. So even if you could control the car, you're basically left praying that you've got enough ramming force to move theirs out of the way, in time. So, generally, people who are forced to live in these areas tend to take security along with them in other forms, as you mention.
