[Ars] Half-Life 3 totally, absolutely confirmed by hidden Dota 2 update file - Page 10

Gabe and Valve are one of the most selfish developers out there. There is a HUGE demand for Half Life 3 and Portal 3 yet they don`t seem to care at all.
That says a lot about them as developers and how much they care about their fans.

How does it make them selfish that there isn't Halflife/Portal 3 yet? Besides the fact that Gabe is not a developer (he is the director of Valve), do you think that both games are completed and everyone at Valve is just playing them in locked rooms, making sure that no one else would ever be allowed to play them?

Everyone at Valve is hyper-aware of the demand for their games, which is why if they are making Halflife/Portal 3 they're going to take their time and do their best to release a perfect game.

On top of that, I believe they are still working on their new Source Engine, Steam Machines, Steam Controller, and Steam OS among other things. Sounds like they are quite busy at the moment.

Well, see the problem is. Valve can't make games with the number 3 in the title till the new engine is done. So unless you want Portal 2 Episode 1, you might as well wait.

Valve also doesn't halfass things. They would rather not release it if the game is not up to their standards, which is why they have made nothing but gold. Which can not be said by pretty much any other dev.

They also have the most popular game hub to run, while at the same time think of new ways to expand their market.

Really what the company needs to do is expand, but you don't want to expand too quickly. Otherwise you might bite off more than you can chew.

Come on man, Portal 2 was released almost 5 years ago and Half Life 2 twelve years ago.
If Valve cared they would have made HL3 on the same engine as HL2 ages ago or speed up making the Source engine so that they could make Portal 3 or even a Portal 4. Half Life 2 story ended like there would clearly be a sequel to that game.

Its a middle ground between not caring and making sequels in a timely fashion. Valve are clearly at the not caring area

They should do their fans a favor and drop Steam OS, the steam controllerm steam machines, and focus on the next Source engine, and the next line up of games. CSGO is over 3 years old at this point...Kinda long for one game cycle. 12 years since HL2, 4 years since Portal 2...They need to get their act together.

Steam was made popular from CS and HL2. They should keep that in mind and continue pleasing the fans that made them what they are today.

No thanks, I am enjoying my steam link and controller immensely. Also the gift of all future valve games was a cherry on top.

I'll stand by valve while they take their time and explore new things, nothing wrong with that.

Does the lack of new games from some of my favorite franchises suck? Yeah, but life goes on. I have so many games in my backlog (556 in my library maybe 150 completed) that I could probably be content until I retire.

I'd rather not have a desktop in my living room. I already have enough equipment in there (roku, nas, router, wii u, ups, modem, moca adapter all hidden behind a wall mounted 70" 4k tv (well router is above)). Currently my desktop is out in the garage since it's mainly for movie encoding.

Unless you want to dedicate your computer only to be used on the tv I would rather use the steam link. You don't need to do anything on the host side, just press the button on the controller and its on, then select which computer you want to connect to. Then another benefit, I can have both of my sons computer stream to it as well. So if my oldest wants to play BoI under his steam account he can, then when he's done I can switch to my pc and play MGS V from my steam account.

Here is actually a pic from my son playing BoI last night.

You make it sound like they can do one or the other. At this point I would say they have enough money that if they wanted to they could hire a dev team and start work on HL3 now. That they're working on/'exploring' other things is not the reason this game isn't getting made.
