[Techpowerup] NVIDIA Prepares a Controversial Change to its Driver Update Distribution - Page 16

Since you can just uninstall the program once you update your drivers, the real reason they want to do this is to get your emails; but for what reason? I think they are moving to paid driver updates, tbh. It might take a few years of psyops moves like this.

Step 1) require email to get more up to date driver.
Step 2) require GFE to run all the time just to use the card.
Step 3) Paid early access to beta driver (bundle drivers with AAA title pre-order "bonuses")
Step 4) Paid timely driver updates

I can only image if they hook GFE into the driver itself so you can't shutdown the program without stopping the driver... the door opening is getting bigger AMD...

Are they going to DMCA/ sue people for re-hosting drivers so non-registered people can use them? They're only doing this because they can make money off it somewhere, so logic dictates that they will sue people that share it unregistered people.

Installing GFE and uninstalling it for every driver would be annoying.

1. Yep
2. Could see it
3. Not likely
4. Never going to happen

Piff. The Nvidia CEO could come to my house and kick me in the nuts and I'd still buy the next 1080 ti or whatever it is. I'm fairly sure 99% of the, "Guess it's red team next time" people would do the same.

It's annoying and bs that they did this, but, I'm just accepting my name is Toby this time around and getting on with it.

GeForce Experince seems to be a lot more important to Nvdia than it is to the gamers/enthusiast. And, there is a reason why I have been avoiding GFE like a plague ever since it was introduced. My reasons are similar to what has been echoed here already, and I also view GFE as a spyware.

Nvidia ha been pushing people to get "stable drivers " through GFE ever since it started having crashing driver issues as a I recall from my own experience. There has to be a closer software relationship between GFE and driver management, and I don't know what it is, but I do know it's not favorable to me (fine tune gimping through GFE, etc, who knows... Lol), because it is now being forced on Nvidia users with a take it or leave it option.

In other words, Nvidia seems to be saying if you (the Nvidia user) want our "more frequent driver service", we need to monetize it somehow by collecting your data (so we can fine tune our gimping further.... Ok , ok jk... tongue.gif. )

I think it's time to avoid Nvidia altogether, as their only claim to fame was better driver support than its competitor, but if that's not even on the table without strings attached (and I doubt GFE is as innocuous as just a bloatware ), why not take a ride on the other side.... tongue.gif

That's pretty unfortunate if Nvidia will actually do that. I mean, I do understand why exactly Nvidia is doing this: it's easier for them to gather various software/hardware data (with user's consent, of course - similar to Valve's surveys) for statistical and bug reporting purposes and they can also spam more people with Ads about their "exciting new products" like Nvidia Shield, BUT a lot of their video card users aren't interested in doing any of those (and neither do I) and so they should always have a choice of NOT wasting their storage and RAM resources on unwanted redundantware. Hopefully they'll reconsider this after seeing all the negative responses to this.

Microsoft hasn't reconsidered yet, so why would Nvidia!

IMO drivers should have some ultra stable LTS version. I dont like rapid release that compromise stability.

In Linux distribution we have 3 versions, Beta, normal, LTS.
So are firefox browser, beta, normal, LTS

I hope AMD/Nvidia driver follow such structure. We only have beta driver vs WHQL so far. We dont have LTS version of driver.

the only issue i see there is nvidia demands for your email and registration with them
post #157 of 268
I prefer to download from the website so I can keep older drivers and roll back if i need to. Geforce doesn't save them, as far as I can see.
So, I have to have an email to take a pzz now?
This is ridiculous. redface.gif
I don't mind it if GFE downloaded the installer and kept it instead of just installing the driver and removing the installer. It is pretty stupid to download the driver again and again just for troubleshooting.
