[ZDNET] Windows 10 upgrade nags become more aggressive, offer no opt-out - Page 25

Ok, I got this for the first time as an Important update on 1 of 3 systems. The only good thing is this time it did not pre download(not install) it like it has in the past.

That system was set to get recommended so I just assumed it was that. After hiding it a while back and having it come back recently, It is now in the Important category.

It is still under recommended on my other 2 systems.

To add to this, my brother was offered an upgrade and took it. In the end his system has NO driver support. I was told it was just lagging all over the place.

They may do more harm than good in the end. Add this to how bad media center's guide has become the fact that more games(and I am less and less interested in the current crop of games) are going to be cross platform they are not doing them selves or users any good.

I guess it is time to check family members systems for this update.

this argument has been rehashed too many times on this forum alone, point is, people who are opting out typically have some sort of hardware with no driver support for SOME hardware, programs that have yet to receive an update to be compatible(ie, vpn software) or in my case.....simply don't want it. I don't require a reason to not want something. this is called freewill

and before someone says to give it a try, I have it installed on my htpc and also had tried it on my spare gaming rig when in beta(pre-release).....I'm not really impressed. the blocky ui reminds me of older windows' OS'

This over-reach in privacy is one thing, no different than most Internet sites and Google has been doing past 15+ years, But we should be given the choice, especially where we pay for our own ISP's, should start changing ads engines for using our bandwidth, I see Windows10 no differently....

But seriously, Microsoft not giving us the choice of what drivers and updates on our own individual systems is pure over-reach and BS, I see so much more hate over Nvidia doing this but adults OK with Microsoft doing this?

But, I want my DX12 gaming "insert whimpering puppy sound here", its a trap!

That... And the fact that the updates from Windows 10 if you read the KB for it, it's just... Utter crap lol.

If you want to be that way then stay away from any Windows OS, don't own a commonly owned smartphone and go ahead and get a secure email provider instead of the popular one. Might as well buy a tinfoil hat while you at it.

Most of those settings have been there for the past iterations of windows. Those same kind of privacy invading tactics are present in android, apple smartphones, email services like Gmail and other popular ones. So if these bothers you then make sure you don't own anything of that sort. There are measures to keep the door slightly closed but if you don't like their invasion of privacy maybe just opt for a different OS... Anyways tinfoil hat post unsubscribed.

In case you ever come back to this thread - even though you just said you wouldn't, though you're free to - let me tell you that you made yourself perfectly clear - there is no language barrier working against your case, which is compounded by the fact that you end that very same last post with yet another instance of what you try to divert at the beginning, it's just that you were objectively patronizing people for having a different and justifiable, rational opinion on why things should be different like xenophobe did.

The current news is plastered with articles where people are justifiably worried about this kind of tactic coming from multiple companies, ISPs, search engines, OS makers, etc. So, yes, maybe people are starting to have a common understanding of what privacy should be and I don't think that any company in particular is being singled out.

Crazy Talk!!!

Anyone with a dissenting opinion is obviously wrong.

/sarcasm

Honestly, if I read another "what do you have to hide, you must be up to no good...." comment, I may throw my monitor out the window. I don't understand why people think it is fine for every company(ISP, Google, MS etc) to sell our data and infringe more and more on our privacy. I do not require something to hide in order to desire some respect of MY personal information. Just because android and others already do it, does not justify it, or make it right. Why can't people understand this??? It is completely bewildering to me.

I obviously am up to nefarious activity, else why would I desire privacy----> ABSURD

Ben Franklin said something once.... Nevermind, doesn't matter, the founding fathers were obviously out of touch...

While I am no fan of being spied on the chief reason I won't upgrade yet it is because I like to manually go through my updates and apply the ones I chose to as I see fit. The idea of the OS installing GPU drivers etc. is the non starter for me. I tend to find drivers that work and then stay on them until there is a reason to switch and as far as updates keep my security up to date and tend to do patch updates once I have had time to review them individually. I don't want to wake up to a non functioning system because my OS decides it is more like an Overlord.

As far as telemetry, it should be a concern for people and never let the Ad Hominem "Conspiracy Theorist" label tactic get under your skin. It is the last desperate act of a person with no counter argument. biggrin.gif
Personally I just let them have the data because I do not possess enough knowledge to keep my system from doing so. I heard that some of the scripts people have disabled yet M$ still has a way around it and can re enable telemetry.

Sticking with 8.1 for now because I am used to it and can control my updates. For my media/work system I tend to prefer 7 as for some reason my torrent client functions best in 7(in regard to speeds...would love to know why but I am not a networking guy). biggrin.gif

I have an update.

I was checking other computers and noticed that any with recommended updates on have the Windows 10 icon and removing it causes it to come back as an important update.

Here is the strange part. Telling those systems to only get important updates instantly moved the Windows 10 update and sent it back to the option pile.

Time will tell if it stays put.

Your computer and others within your domain have been struck with a vicious form of Redmond "10" Melanoma, it will never go away until you re-install from scratch, the ORIGINAL windows OS and choose carefully which updates to apply with your fresh system installation coolsmiley02.gif .
