One of the reasons consoles are using the AMD APUs, is because AMD put a lot of effort to tailor the APU specifically for each console. Intel do not wish to make specialised CPUs for the consoles, and nvidia doesn't have an overall answer like AMD has.
But it also cost a lot to AMD to make it work.

But the problem is, that the consoles do not help AMD overall. They are nice for the first year. Than the income dwindles away. The PS4 has been released in 2013. Since then, each year the market is cut in half. And it will take several good more years at least to be replaced. So even with nintendo going to AMD, nintendo do not sell in enough numbers to get AMD out of the jam they are in right now.

AMD is monetizing their HBM prowess, though. Consoles are just the display of their engineering evolution - now at the third iteration(generic>gddr5>hbm).
They have a mature advantage and it is still anyone's guess what Intel can offer Hynix to curtail AMD from literally shunting the entire stacked dram market - 2.5D is superior to 3D due to costs.
Nvidia is also behind for having bet on the HMC bandwagon.

In some ways I feel AMD is just digging a bigger hole.
What is preventing them from starting to fill it back up?
I know is a myriad of different things, but it just seems like AMD keeps getting worse.
Why cant they change this trajectory? I know its a big ship and changing course is dramatic and big but...
Dramatic restructure in order?

Who knows, maybe Arctic Islands and Zen will show success. I really hope they do. If those product lines do not have some sort of commercial success for AMD, well, what happens then?
The Fury line is really cool and exciting and all, but it kind of seems like it was/is a flop. Initial supply was so slow I cant help but feel that put a bit of a damper on things.

Maybe they're really really playing the long game here.
We're seeing some exciting stuff with DX12 and 290/290x/390/390x performance.

*I have no idea what I am talking about btw*

Its about the mindset of the consumers who are buying those products. They heard that Intel was better and they get 400$ CPU that is either a total overkill for their needs, or AMD offers something of the same quality but for less $. With nVidia they say : i know that AMD are hot and have bad drivers. They are not really incorrect, but... oh well.
More or less is about marketing.

Really why is the revenue DOWN 26%. AMD SOOOO far in the hole. That's why they were just bought out.
In terms of bench marks, and profits. Their products can't keep up with intel or Nvidia. Proof their stock closed up 2.21 vs Intel @ 33.80 or Nvidia 25.35

If someone comes in and buys 85% of the stock in your company. Is it still yours? Its a buy out. @51% they had to pay the poison pill at double the face value of said stock or 34%.

Nantong Fujitsu Microelectronics to take 85% ownership and serve as controlling shareholder, paying AMD approximately $371 million in cash

Material factors that could cause actual results to differ materially from current expectations include, without limitation, the following: Intel Corporation's dominance of the microprocessor market and its aggressive business practices may limit AMD's ability to compete effectively; AMD relies on GF to manufacture most of its microprocessor and APU products and certain of its GPU and semi-custom products. If GF is not able to satisfy AMD's manufacturing requirements, its business could be adversely impacted;

AMD has 10,000 employees to the best of my knowledge. They will contribute 1,700 employees to the new establishment. It isn't a buyout as far as I can tell.

No, that's not what's happening here.

Fujitsu and AMD are doing a Joint Venture, essentially creating a new company combining AMD's high-volume ATMP facilities and 1700 workers with Fujitsu.

Fujitsu owns 85% of this new company, and will pay AMD $371 Million.
