Your experience HeadPHONE + sound card? - Page 2

I benched my Essence STX because sound quality was much worse than my E17 v1.0, most probably because of the STX's high output impedance (10 ohm vs the E17's 0.1 ohm). The difference was very obvious. Right now, i'm using an E17 amping and converting to my HD598's.

HD598's at $150 and an E17, possibly, at $60 (i got mine for 60 pounds at amazon UK 2 years ago at a discount) is, probably, the best perf/price you will ever find.

Nothing can really compare to external dac/amp. Right now I am using my E17 with Bayerdynamic dt 770.

I LOVE my AKG 701!! But again, as he said people have different tastes. I will have to say though, even though I love my AKG, there are genre's that its not good for. If you like metal, rock, or any music that involves bass, the AKG is not a good fit. It has excellent high/mid range...but the bass is not quite there. It's excellent for instrumentals/vocals though, and the best gaming headphones I have ever had.

I have it paired with the Audioengine D1. Really great combo in my opinion.

I can't believe no-one mentioned HifiMan's planear magnetic headphones yet. Something like the HE-400 fits OP's budget, and they sound amazing.

Planars are notoriously hard to drive with few exceptions such as the Oppo PM3. HE 400/400i really need a good 1000mW into 38 Ohms to sound great, and 2000 to sound spectacular. The 400S has a much higher sensitivity and will sound ok with crummy sources, but any headphone sounds better with quality amplificaiton from $30 earbuds to $5000 elitist stuff.
