I wouldn't be surprised if that is what they're going for, as that patent drawing looks a lot more like a handheld system than a controller for a home system. Why else would it only have one set of shoulder buttons and flat analog nubs instead of sticks?

Wishful thinking, because compared to a stick the analog nubs are horrid and wear out extremely quick.

I assume you're talking about the rubber?
I have no idea what people are doing to wear the tops of their sticks off, I've seens lots of controllers with massive play in the mechanism but outside of public kiosks or ferret attacks I've never seen the rubber come off.

I actually tore my 3DS apart to adjust the spring tension and I'm quite impressed with the mechanism in Nintendo's analog pads. Tension is provided by a spring looped around both a disk in the analog pad and equal size lips on the chassis, so unlike every other analog controller I've ever seen, there is no pressure on the parts measuring movement.
The internal components of the 3DS pads should last for generations, I would love to see those on the NX controller.

Granted, with the new Xbone Elite controller you can finally map out the dead zone, a calibration utility would make almost any controller last next to forever as long as it has enough resolution to support the large dead zone, but those 3DS pads will basically fail catastrophically before they lose their centering ability.

I've gone through a few 3ds already that the analog pad gets very loose, almost reminds me of the N64 days....that middle joystick would only last a couple of months before I was asking for a new controller.
