GameCube was a good console, with some great games. I loved a lot of them.
But the Console itself was a failure, in terms of sales it made the original xbox look good.
Other than the fact that the Gamecube controller had its flaws, no left z button and no analog stick buttons. Along with the fact that the system used small DVDs, pretty much killing the console from getting multi-plat games. As well as no online system, and decided to follow sony in the use of memory cards. The System was still able to create a pretty cool game experience.
The Games are what made the Gamecube a great console to own, but the console itself was flawed. Lacking from many of the same problems that kept the N64 down. It had more power than the PS2, but with no full size DVD drive that meant nothing.
The Xbox sold a whopping 24-25 million units (no exact numbers are available).
The Gamecube sold 21.74 million units.
No left Z button? The Xbox didn't have any.
The Gamecube had a modem, and online games (just not Halo).
I'll admit, the mini-disk thing was a terrible idea, but...
At the time, the idea of launching a system with a modem and hard drive was absolutely not an option for anyone but Microsoft. Why?
Because the entire Xbox division is, to this day, basically a marketing expense. Why on earth would anyone continue to dump money into a product that after 14 years has yet to actually produce returns?
The Xbox division under any other name would be a bigger failure than all other failed videogame consoles combined.
