External all-in-one recommendation

Thread Starter
O.k I'm not really into audio equipent. I read the "OCN's Most Recommended Audio Products" thread. I like some of the information on there, but I was missing some kind of all in one device recommendations. I dont know if these devices are any good but I did some browsing and found these.
"Asus Xonar Essence One"
"Oehlbach XXl DAC Ultra"
"ASUS Xonar Essence STU"
"Denon DA-300USB"
There must be a reason why there was no such categorie, so I wanted to hear from you, what do you think of these DAC + Headphone AMP's. or can you maybe recommand my another setup?
I would like to invest in a nice Headphone + Monitor Setup but have absolutely no Idea what to get. Beyerdynamics DT990 seem nice (whats the difference between 250Ohms and 600Ohms)
I'm into Gaming, OST, Movies, Rock and Electro (in that hierachy) and currently have a Steelseries Syberia V2 As for speakers I got some Logitech 2.1 system. (Don't even know the name of those, they aren't even mine, lol) running off my onboard Sound biggrin.gif, you probably think ohh my***. So I basically start from scratch.

-So I wanted to start my upgrade with a nice pair of Headphones + DAC (preferabkly with integrated Headphone amp) Budget of like 400€

-Down the road I'd eventually like to upgrade my "Monitors", preferably Akive ones. Budget maybe another 400€

On another note, how do you guys hook up you microphones, are you going throug Onboard sound. I just need the mic for Teamspeak/Skype; nothing fancy
I'll be running this setup of my computer, I do not have the internal space for a soundcard (Running SLI) so I need external devices, and I would actually prefer to have one good device that can do a little bit of everything.

I'm living in Luxembourg so my best shopping choice is the internet.

Thanks
TDeus

DT990 Pro Limited Edition
Because it has straight cable compared to the "vanilla" coiled cable. And the price difference is only 10€. The 600 ohm version is for hipsters/studio use, 250 ohm is best for general use.

As for DAC/amp: EHP-O2Di
If you want some multi-functionality then you need to look at stuff like Creative Sound Blaster X7 or the ones you already mentioned.

I've never seen this, very nice. There are other such all in one units since you seem to be wondering, many with preamp functionality too, like the Audio-GD NFB-15. There are more beyond your price range like the Woo Audio WA7, Parasound ZDac v.2, Burson Conductor.

Ok let's be realistic here. The OP's initial budget for headphones and a nice DAC/AMP is $400. He wants to add monitors down the line, so he's going to need a line out on his amp, and it wouldn't hurt to have something that can be used to pre-amp powered speakers.

I'm going to suggest the Schiit Magni 2 uber and the Schiit Modi 2 uber. That's going to be $300. They are a seperate, very small, stackable DAC and AMP. Headphones are going to depend on the quality of sound you want. I don't think you can go wrong with the HIFIMAN HE400S for 250ish USD. If you want to spend less, Sennheiser HD598 still sounds VERY good and is on Amazon for $150 now (regular 300).

With this setup, for 450 or 550 upfront, you will have exceptional sound quality, with the ability to add a pair of powered studio monitors later. By the way if you want to come in at budget- $400, get the non uber version of the DAC but do get the uber version of the amp. That'll be $400 even for amp/dac/headphones with the HD598. You will need RCA patch cables and a USB A/B cable. Get these from Schiit for $40.

Mic wise it's very simple, you just plug your mic into your integrated motherboard audio on the back of your machine. You can set seperate output and input devices in Windows version since either 7 or Vista. I'm not sure. Anyways, just set the DAC as default device and set the motherboard audio to default communication device in control panel. Very simple. Same deal if using a USB mic.

Make sure to plug the DAC into a USB 2.0 port for reduced noise.

No, the budget is not $400. It's 400€.
And he lives in Luxembourg. It's in Europe.

I would hope to god you meant Passive.
