Theoretically it's possible for the microcode to set the board in such a way to lock the BCLK adjustments on the board without a K CPU installed but I don't think they have done this--I think it is just like it was with Nehalem. The reason this can be done again is BCLK is no longer tied directly to PCIe so OCing the BCLK doesn't put other things out of spec. This is the way it was on Sandy Bridge-->Broadwell, making BCLK OCing unstable, unreliable, and effectively unusable. Locked multiplier CPUs were in effect locked completely. Now that BCLK has been "freed" again, you should be able to OC with that just as you could on first gen Core iX processors.

The board will have to have BCLK adjustments though I imagine most of the good makes/models will. I haven't done this personally of course so I can't be 100% sure, but from all the stuff I've read you are now again free to adjust the BLCK so OCing can be done on "locked" processors in that way.

Well that would only be good for consumers looking for free extra performance, or something new to play with.

The jaded cynic in me wants to think that Intel wouldnt allow it, they charge a lot extra for unlocked multiplier chips and this would lessen their value, IIRC people have been overclocking 6xxxk i5 and i7 using bclk almost as far as people using just multiplier. Hope I'm wrong though, doesnt seem to be a lot of definite info about just yet. smile.gif

this actually seems pretty promising since i'd done some reading on the skylake chips, but i haven't found anything definite. if it's true then an i5 6400 and a cheap-ish mobo (£50-65) would be the better option! new gen, new scene smile.gif

So i'm deciding to go with the Asus H110 Trooper mobo along with the i5 6400 since it's the cheapest / best option. the specs on the website for the mobo recommend using DDR3/DDR3L ram running less than 1.5v. I was luckily given 2 x 4GB sticks of 1333mhz ram which supposedly runs at 1.5v. is there any way of under-volting it or will it cause performance issues? Cheers in advance.

You can undervollt it iin Bios but in the same way as overclocking theres no guarantee it will be stable until you test it and potentially mess with the timings etc.

I'll look into some guides. thanks again. not looking for some drastic undervolting. then again i have no idea what's the smallest increment down in relation to getting it stable timing wise biggrin.gif we'll see!
Yeah you can undervolt it...some RAM will play nice with undervolting, some won't. Probably shouldn't go higher than 1333; if it doesn't work undervolted at that mem clock you could try going for DDR3-1066 or something which would probably work. Undervolting is essentially overclocking in reverse. Overclocking you often need higher than stock voltage to remain stable at higher speeds; undervolting you often need lower than stock speeds to use the lower voltage. Within some margin of course--light OCing can be done with no voltage increase; light undervolting can be done with no speed decrease. All depends on the individual silicon wink.gif You're free to have a go and see what you come up with.

Fingers crossed then. if this ram is 1333mhz at 1.5v i guess it shouldn't be a problem to slightly undervolt it and keep the timings. thanks for all your help guys. Peace!

It's good enough no worry but that memory will not work you need low voltage DDR3 1.35v or less also keep in mind an cheap DDR4 kit will cost a little more thumb.gif

If i lower the voltage (and timings if need be) it should be okay though right?
