Help balancing CPU gaming bottlenecks.

Thread Starter
Hello all,

I'm in the process of piecing together a small 1024x768 LAN box, no build thread yet as I want all the pieces first.

I have the following from my main box that I've upgraded from, for use with this project:
16GB 1600c9 DDR3
512GB mSata SSD
GTX 660 3GB OEM

I'm having trouble deciding on a processor that will best work with the smaller resolution. My issue is understanding the CPU bottleneck that I myself am imposing by using a 1024x768 resolution on what will be an internal display. Such a small resolution typically adds more stress on the CPU than the GPU, I'd like to be able to use the power of the GTX 660 to obtain high settings, 60fps, at that smaller resolution. At the same time I want to build a balanced machine, there's no sense in putting an i7 in here as it would just be overkill.

So I ask you, with a GTX 660 and 1024x768 resolution, what processor would you recommend for a good balance? Don't worry about budget, I'll flex that as needed. Personally I was thinking an i3 would do well but I'm open to all feedback, especially if there are cheaper options that would also use the full potential of the GPU.

i5 at the minimum. Find a 2500K or 3570K used. If buying new, might as well go for the 6600K if you can find one. If money is no object, might as well go with a 5830K and crank all your video settings to the max.

Lol, I appreciate the humor. Thanks for the suggestion, I know that many newer AAA titles recommend an i5 though they don't mention what resolution that's for; likely 1080p as that's more common.

1080P is the norm my friend. With your resolution, I feel that 100+ on high would be easy to attain.

I don't know what it is, but you sir have sparked some thought. I'll just disable cores, HT, and adjust frequencies to replicate different processors on the market using my current rig at the desired resolution to test. Nothing is ever quite as good as experience, eh?

Resolution and eye candy have no affect on the CPU (for the most part).
Drawing 120fps+ is what is going to tax your CPU.
Most any unlocked i5/7 will work out fine. thumb.gif

That is an excellent idea my friend. That what I did to find out how many cores I really need to drive my 1440P monitor when I had my FX6300 and 6 core (3 modules 2 threads per module) on an AMD CPU performed flawlessly. Picked up a 4690K last Black Friday and now I'm set for the next quarter decade lol.

Resolution is 100% GPU's job.

CPU bottleneck with low details/resolution should look like this :
200FPS (Max.) in game X with non-OC CPU 2500k
300FPS (Max.) in the same game, after 50-60% OC on 2500k.

Crucial thing is minimum FPS, which WILL be limited by CPU performance (in CPU intensive places).
My advice : Just get a CPU that can take all games U want to play in those, and U R golden.

Here's a comparison for 3DMark06 with different settings :
Default : LINK
Downsampling : LINK
Downsampling + AA/AF : LINK

If resolution/AA/AF was CPU dependant, CPU Score from above test would suffer the most - but it didn't.
GPU temps on the other hand went up significantly.
Hope it clears things out for few smile.gif
