[AMD/SeekingAlpha] Advanced Micro Devices' (AMD) CEO Lisa T. Su on Q3 2015 Results - Earnings Call Transcript

AMD had their quarterly update on Q3 2015 results yesterday, and along with that they always have investors meeting.
I found some tidbits about future products that was very interesting so I thought they should be posted.

They will be using both GloFo and TSMC for future products and they taped out many FinFET products in Q3 (just recently). My guess: Zen and 400 series GPUs from TSMC. SOC`s from GloFo.
Quote:
... in the third quarter (Q3 2015) we also tapped out multiple products in FinFET technologies across both of our foundry partners that are on track to enter production next year.

This is SOC designs for consoles. Update for PS4/XBOne with better performing chips or more energy efficient than current ones? Anyway, available in H2 2016 it seems
Quote:
Demand from Sony and Microsoft indicates that the record setting sales pace of this generation of game consoles will remain strong. We also remain on track to begin revenue shipments of our additional semi-custom design wins starting in the second half of 2016.

This one we heard about many times now. Zen is planned for 2016, but not confirmed if they manage to meet the deadline ("on track")
Quote:
Zen remains on track for availability in 2016 and we believe will return AMD to the mainstream server and high-end client market in a significant way in 2017 and beyond.

Follow up: They have a target of 40% IPC over previous generation, but still not confirmed
Quote:
As we stated in the Financial Analyst Day we had a target of 40% IPC performance of Zen over our previous generation. We believe we’re on track for that. Relative to process technology we've tapped out multiple products to multiple fabs in FinFET, and we believe that they are also on track in terms of overall ramp. So we continue to focus on both of those aspects, both the architecture of the process technology but so far so good.

GPUs: New architecture will have 2x the performance per watt vs Fiji cards.
Quote:
We are also focused on delivering our next generation GPUs in 2016 designed to improve performance per watt by 2x compared to our current offerings based on design architectural enhancements as well as advanced FinFET products process technology.[/B][/SIZE]

AMD will launch new graphic cards to replace ALL exisiting 300/Fiji cards in the coming quarters? This is more or less confirmed Q1 2016 launch of next generation GPUs isnt it? It will be from both AIBs and OEMs, meaning a complete new line up? Damn thats sooner than I thought!
Quote:
I think it's also fair to say that the graphics portfolio is quite broad and so you will see us updating the entire portfolio over the coming quarters and both on the OEM side and on the AIB side so again it's a strategic effort, it's not a one or two quarter effort but to regain our graphic share.

Type 7970-range ish first is my guess. Can`t wait for these to drop biggrin.gif

On the other hand it makes my decision to buy a new graphic card now very difficult. Buy now or wait til Q1? Damn tongue.gif

For those that doesnt know: AMD launched 7970 in late December 2011 (Q4). It was a new architecture and a new node. Seems very close to what AMD is aiming for this time around isnt it?...

Considering how well the card has aged, it was certainly a good investment. At 1200 core they are still very fast to this day. I used to run my 7970ghz at 1200/1600 and barely touched the volts. That said, these are the cards I've been waiting for. Still likely holding onto my 290x for a bit into 2016, though.

I've been holding onto my R7770 for the 'next big thing' for awhile now. redface.gif First it was that I wasn't going to upgrade until adaptive sync rolled around & I was just about to give up on waiting for the next die shrink.
