HTPC / light gaming system. use i7 3770 or step up to haswell or skylake ?

Thread Starter
in the planning stage...

Trying to decide if I want to build an HTPC around an i7 3770 or sell it and build on a newer platform. The computer it came out of had a fried Mobo, and I am fairly sure the CPU is fine. All the errors were south bridge related. USB was dead he audio was dead and 1/2 of the SATA ports were not working, or would not work for long.

The use would be HPTC for the family room connected to the TV with some light gaming, surfing and photo viewing.

Light gaming == minecraft client (connected to a local linux server) or maybe wandering about Skyrim so my kid's can tell us what to do ;-)

Here are the parts I have sitting around:

i7 3770, 8GB DDR3 1600 Mhz memory, 460W OEM PSU from a Dell XPS 8700 , a couple of older WD Caviar Black SATA HDDs.

MoBo choices are slim, and the best right now is an ATX Z75 ASRock.

TV is a 720p Panasonic plasma, vintage 2006 that still looks awesome but it will not live forever and I'll likely upgrade to a 4K display in a year or two.

I expect to have an MSI GTX 760 2GB or possibly a GTX 770 2GB to trickle down after we upgrade one or more of the families desktops, but I'm not sure these will have enough vRAM for 4K.

Given all of this, should I use the i7 3770 as the foundation? or sell it and build around a newer CPU and Chipset.

That CPU is more than capable of handling anything you are likely to throw at an HTPC/light gamer. I don't see any reason not to use it.

Here is a list of 1155 socket mobo's that will work for that CPU
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=100007627%20600093976&IsNodeId=1&bop=And&Order=REVIEWS&PageSize=30

Personally I stay from AsRock, but if you insist, there is a Z77 on that list.

If it were me, for an HTPC, I'd go for one of these:

Thanks for the comments. I agree the 3770 has enough capability. My concern is lack of decent LGA 1155 motherboards available with modern features like SATA 3, decent motherboard audio, s/pdif optical out, USB 3...

My receiver is a Denon ( predates hdmi ) but it has multiple optical inputs, and I'm not planning to upgrade it so having optical out is a must-have.

I know I can add cards to cover the SATA or Sound or USB, but it starts adding up in cost.

At some point it seems better to sell it and start fresh with a more modern motherboard and get by with less CPU.

I can go full ATX as the cabinet has other 19 inch home audio, so I was looking at the Silverstone GD09B

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811163257

Heat and noise isn't a concern as it is behind glass in a built-in cabinet that has excellent ventilation and is cool.

You mentioned not being a fan of ASRock. I've not used them before but was looking at this one.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157304

opinions?

The other MoBo I have been looking at is a Gigabyte B75 chipset, but it has only one SATA 3, which is probably OK, but it doesn't have optical audio out. It has an S/PDIF Header, but I'm not sure how I would wire that up to my receiver. I need to check as I might have a digital coax in. This board has been out of stock but it looks like its available again so maybe this is a good option. Also micro ATX so it opens up other options for cases down the road.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128555

I'm open to input if anyone has it.

tnx in advance.

I used this with an older TV and receiver. It allows me to use HDMI and then send the audio out thru optical.

My opinion of AsRock... I'd rather have this refurbished Asus motherboard that has all the features you are looking for at a great price than a brand new AsRock with more features with a lower price. They have a bad history and that's tough to shed for some. They still maintain a price point which is pound for pound much lower than "equivalent" models from popular manufacturers like Asus, Gigabyte and MSI. They are cheaper for a reason. Cuts are made somewhere whether it be cheaper materials or manufacturing methods. That doesn't sit well for me, and never will.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA6BM35M6951&cm_re=p8h77-_-9SIA6BM35M6951-_-Product

Now if you can find this board brand new for a good price, it'd be foolish to pass it up, IMHO

Even the refurbished one you listed is out of stock.

I appreciate the suggestion. I'll keep searching and this gives me another MoBo to try and find.

tnx

edit: what about this one ?

ASUS P8Z77-M LGA

And, is there a source for backplates? I guess it isn't critical because it will be backed into a cabinet.

ASUS P8Z77-M LGA

And, is there a source for backplates? I guess it isn't critical because it will be backed into a cabinet.

Lol! Well it was in stock yesterday when I posted tongue.gif

I think the P8Z77-M LGA you posted is a winner. It has all the options you want and a back plate really isn't necessary. If you want one you can probably get one direct from Asus. The 3 people that have left reviews for this particular refurbished model seem to be happy.

Still undecided on the Mobo

Gigabyte GA-B75M-D3H Micro ATX LGA1155 Motherboard ($72.09 @ Amazon)
vs
whatever refurb Asus Z77/H77/Z75/??? might be available the day I think about buying. Stock is really sucky for 1155 MoBos.

Or just sell all of this on eBay and get a chromecast dongle.
