Slower Than Paid For Connection

Thread Starter

Greetings,

I'm currently paying for a 200/20 connection, and I have had that before. Recently the bandwidth has dropped considerably. Any idea what could be happening? How do I troubleshoot?

How are you connected to the router? Wi-fi or wired?

If you've had advertised speed previously chances are it will be an ISP issue so I'm afraid there's nothing you can do from your end. Give your ISP a ring.

Who is your supplier out of curiosity?

I wouldn't trust that site, also you have to take geographic location into consideration. You may have 200/20 to Hawaiian resources but it could vary quite a bit getting back to the mainland.

For the record I was only able to get ~3 mbit as a speed test from there on gigabit fiber that tests over 900 Mbps to our local speedtest.net server.

No can. No Flash.

Anyone have any other ideas? I'm specifically looking to troubleshoot.

We have alot of corrosion problems here in Hawaii. Do you own a megger? You could verify all of your internal cables are good, megging center pin to shield. Remove router from equation, go directly to modem(after a reboot) see if you get the 200.

What modem are you using? There are only 4 supported for the 100mbps and up here on oceanic.

Actually, go to speedtest.oceanic.com to see if you get 200/20 connecting in Hawaii. If you do, then it's an external issue that you won't fix.

I don't know what a megger is, sorry.

I tried going directly to modem and saw no change.

Modem is SB6183. I know it's capable of 200 because it's tested satisfactory before.

First, showing your public IP to the world is asking for trouble. I'm just saying, I hope you have an air-tight firewall behind that modem.

Second, if you've cleared your house:
  • check cabling (to include coax and splitters)
  • speed/duplex of all local connections
  • local device configurations
  • check LAN traffic for signs of excessive flooding and/or outbound connections which could significantly skew throughput tests (check for viruses, malware, etc.)

...and you find nothing, or no change in performance occurs, that means there's something wrong on the back-end within the service provider network. In which case, you should call them.

However, it is entirely within the realm of possibility that your ISP "cheated" with regard to your prior speed test(s) to make the results appear better than they actually were when you were seeing ~200Mbps. Either way, you're going to have to contact the ISP if everything in your home/office network is running clean.

Before running such a test, you should make sure nothing on your network is doing something like downloading updates (think phones, Window Update, etc.). Otherwise, your results will be even less accurate than normal when using "speed test" sites. I saw where you said you connected directly through the modem with no change, but I figured I'd offer this tip anyway.

Good advice. Thanks.

Visual check of cabling all that is necessary?

How do I check speed/duplex of local connections?

Device configurations should be good; I even reinstalled firmware on my router.

Other traffic isn't a problem; I only have 3 wired devices and I get the same results when I turned off wireless and disconnected everything else. Again, I also tried this with no router and connected directly to the modem, eliminating all possibility of other devices interfering.

EDIT: Also, I called the ISP before I made this thread. After about an hour of troubleshooting, they couldn't figure out the issue. They offered to send out a tech, but if the tech determined it was a problem on my end, I'd have to pay $70 per hour. I'm trying to do whatever diagnostics he'd do in order to eliminate that possibility.
