Need HELP! first time overclocking ''Fx-8320'' on motherboard ''ASUS® M5A97 R2.0 (DDR3, USB3.0, 6Gb/s)''

Hi everyone I am new to this site and overclocking in general. I just received my first gaming pc. With my motherboard there was a program called AI suite II which I used to overclock using the extreme auto tuning. At the end of the process I ended up with 4Ghz. After reading on forums I heard overclocking using BIOS is much better and I seen people posting on forums they got 4.3-4.5 GHz stable. Would someone please explain to me what exactly i should put in BIOS? I watched few youtube videos with people using the same motherboard I have and processor but in the comment section many people say the settings provided where unstable. If someone could help me out even with screen shots i would be very thankfull. Next time I have some cash for the help i can send a gift of a game to someone on steam biggrin.gif

Here are my specs:
Case
InWIN GT1 BLACK GAMING CASE with 3-125mm fans

Processor (CPU)
AMD FX-8320 Eight Core CPU (3.50GHz/8MB CACHE/AM3+)

Motherboard
ASUS® M5A97 R2.0 (DDR3, USB3.0, 6Gb/s)

Memory (RAM)
8GB KINGSTON HYPER-X FURY DUAL-DDR3 1600MHz (1 x 8GB)

Graphics Card
8GB AMD RADEON™ R9 390X - DVI, HDMI, DP - DX® 12, Eyefinity

Processor Cooling
Super Quiet Titan DragonFly Heatpipe AMD CPU Cooler

Power Supply
CORSAIR 650W VS SERIES™ VS-650 POWER SUPPLY

You are wise to avoid any "automatic" overclocking programs,

I'm sure others will chime in with settings you can use.

But here is a very general description of how overclocking works:

CPU speed is controlled by the FSB (Front Side Bus). For AND FX series CPUs the default is 200 MHz
FSB times Multiplier equals CPU speed
In you screen shot that would be 229 MHz (FSB) X 17.5 (Multiplier) = 4.0075 Ghz

Note that memory kind of works the same way, except there isn't as much granularity is the choices.
You will see in your BIOS only 7 choices. But, as you change the FSB, all the choices will change too.

Read the stickies and threads about FX CPU overclocking, all you can, then ask questions about what you don't understand.

And, as always, back up everything...................

Hi there again, i have change my multiplayer to 18.5x229=4.2365Ghz, and my temperatures are on the pic below. Do you think i should bump it to 19 x 229= 4.351 Ghz ? my voltages used are also in the picture. I read about disabling turbo should i do it ?

And i would like to add when I am using HWMonitor and look at the core clocks they dont jump up and down anymore from 1.6ghz to 4.2ghz they are constantly at 4.2ghz is that good ?

If you are going to overclock with the bios first set it to defaults...you shouldn't mix fsb overclock and multi until you learn your chip and the voltages you need for the clocks..head on over to the 8320 club and set up your rig builder with the info and add it to your signature in the forum settings....it's easier to get stable on multiplier only first....constant clocks means the auto overclock turned off the power saving features which is good until you find an overclock you are happy with and is stable... Turbo has already been disabled if your clocks are constant hwinfo64 is a good program for monitoring temperatures and such...what power supply do you have?

I'm not going to comment on your (a nOOb's) overclock.

I 'll leave it up to you to determine if you overclock will:
Corrupt you drives.
Burn out your VRMs
Fry your CPU.
Light your house on fire.
Piss off you mother.
Make you the laughing stock of the neighborhood.
Cause a rip in the space time continuum send us all back to the 14th century.
...or do something really bad.

You need to read more...a lot more.
