While true, flashing these cards is so easy, and you unlock extra shaders and TMU's in doing so, getting an extra maybe 5% perf for a few minutes of tinkering..I have never seen a 290 fail to flash to a 290X (Though maybe I am just lucky)...and even if it doesn't, that's what that handy little dual bios switch is for biggrin.gif

Interesting... Does that mean a 390 can be flashed to 390X?

That's correct, even a 290 can be flashed to a 390X (requires a bit of messing around, but there is edited 4GB 390X bios's floating about, its a matter of finding a stable one with the right memory edits for your card)...I've had mixed results doing this though (ie: it has lowered the max OC potential, but that may have been due to the bios simply being unsuitable).

I've had 4 290s and none of them have flashed to a 290X.

OP, don't listen to this guy. It is more likely you will get one that is not flashable

I would keep with my selection until I found out about ne that is a more suitable alternative because you shouldn't change your choices merely on the basis of novelty.smile.gif

I mean the concept of 390X didn't change eventhough you encountered a dud. It is coincidental. It is an ecological inference fallacy to interpret a general statement from random events.

I see, thanks for the clarification. Only problem is that I can't afford another 390x at current prices. So that concept has to change for me. I suppose the 390 is the next closest thing to the 390x (if I want good price and 8GB).

I am settled between either a Sapphire Nitro R9 390 or an MSI GTX 970 Gaming LE (not binned but better price). I'm going to pick today sometime and will post quick results/benches after a test of whichever card comes. Hopefully I don't get two lemons in a row.

should you go with the 970, rather than the LE, the tiger edition (GD5T oc) have the better price.
