XFX 390 best buy, overclock question.

Let me start with, thanks for any help:)

My question is, I over clock this to 1176 1650, 185+mv 50% power on Trixx. I get like 1 fps more in ark, and on the heaven benchmark like 50 points. On stock it uses 153 watts or so, when i over clock it to that it uses 350 plus, is this just a bad card and i should take it back, or are the 390s really this bad at over clocking? My PSU, is 750watts with a 50 amp rail, so its more than capable, and besides i tried another PSU. I am using the new beta drivers.

Double watt usage and 1 fps more is disgraceful lol. The 7950 i had, went up by 10 15 fps, when i got it seriously over clocked. The water cooled 290, that bios to 290x, got 20 more fps. I am really disappointed. Looking at the heaven scores the 970, when overclocked gets 400+ points added on the heaven score. I am usually a AMD fan, but..... It is looking like the 390 is a garbage card, compared to a 970, or 290x. Sorry for the rant lol.

Your post lacks information that would be vital to understanding your issue.

1. Resolution you game at.
2. System specs, CPU/RAM
3. gpu usage and cpu usage during gameplay

Some things to consider, ARK is a Gameworks sponsored title, so chances are it will run better on Nvidia.
Heaven Benchmark also runs better on nvidia due to things like tessellation.(some settings in CCC might help)

There are many factors that could affect your overclocking of gpu, Chances are you have powerplay on. Try disabling ULPS and not sure about Trixx but MSI AB allows you to turn off clock speed variations. enabling unofficial overclocking mode, and selecting disabled in drop down. see pic from thread below (AMD compatibility options) This will allow the gpu to stay at max clock speed.

Thank you very much for replying.
The game is at 1080, my cpu is a i5 de lidded with artic sliver 3570k
, ram is corsiar vengeance 1600mhz.

My gpu is maxed, playing the game and running the heaven. I did not check the cpu, because the 290x was running faster, and had a better heaven score. I will check now though. On ark the cpu 4 cores are around 35-50%, power into the gpu is 167 watts not over clocked 37 fps in game. When i oc it, Which is 187 mv, 1176 core speed 1649 mem speed, it raises to 306 watts. That ulps comes disabled on Trixx, and I have tried MSI, same results. The over clock raises the cpu useage 10% the fps went from 37 to 42, so it is more of a boost than I said at first. I dono, it seems using double watts should produce more than 5 fps more.

I tried all those different MSI, it actually got worse, since you cant raise the mv past 100. But either way, 150+ extra watts a hour, is not worth 1-5fps lol. That is like a extra 8 bucks a month in my power bill.

I will take it back prolly though, for a 970 gtx, since it is on sale, and is the same price of 326. Hopefully you are right and it gets better fps in ARK smile.gif, that is the only reason i bought it. Actually since they match amazon pricing its 10 dollars cheaper than a 390.

why did you add that much voltage and is that 50% meaning you changed power limit to + 50%?

try STOCK setttings, then add 10MHz at a time, benching with heaven or something to see if it works.

shouldnt have to touch power limit until the card is unstable

I added that much power because, with out it, it can't run that clock stable. As far as that 50% power thing, I am not totally sure, other than if you leave it at 0, the card wont run at the speed you set it to.

A lot of games are just cpu limited (by a single thread), especially when there's a lot of units and complex lighting going on.

DX12 should improve the situation, but of course only for games made with it.

Ark is, but i read the 970 isnt fully dx 12, is that just a rumor? The post is quite old, and the official site says it is fully dx 12.

I think your pushing the card too much especially the VRAM which is having a negative effect on your scores. A good starting point would be 1100 core, 1500 VRAM, +50% power limit and +25-50 power in trixx.

The 390 should be between the 970 and 980 depending on the game and resolution so switching to the 970 would be somewhat of a downgrade especially in situations when more than 3.5Gb of VRAM is warrented.
