Its pretty much common knowledge that pre-spreading the tim is always worse. I dont get why people keep insisting on using this method.

Ill have to respectfully disagree, as its always worked for me. Maybe I just have the best 'technique'
Also Gelid GC extreme comes with a spreading tool and recommend its done like that.

So you're just going to ignore the numerous tests and benchmarks?

Its not that Im ignoring them. Im just speaking from personal experience, which I always find much more reliable. More than one way to skin a rabbit, each to their own and all that...

It depends on how thick you spread the tim. If you spread it very thin, then you run the risk of creating small airpockets between the IHS and CPU cooler base, which can worsen the performance significantly. On the other hand, using too little paste results in sub-par performance when applying it as a blob as well, but you will at least get a solid connection in the middle.

I guess the bottom line is that if you don't know how much you need, making a blob is the safer way to go.

Thats the one, completely agree. Ive ran countless benchmarks and have always overclocked, it works for me spreading it so I spread it. Now back to the case smile.gif.

Thread Starter
I tried the blob, rice, line and spread. Best I can do ~73. I'm stumped. All coolers are giving higher than normal temps so we can eliminate those. Chip gone back? Had it for quite a while as my daily driver, then hackintosh, then htpc.

when I get back in town I'll work on getting some space for the gpu and start loading Fallout

I know it would suck, and personally I wouldnt. But maybe disable Hyperthreading?

I wonder if you have a bad temp sensor on the motherboard? Is the chip throttling at all? Can you do a finger test on the heatsink to see if feels hot at all?

See this is why I want an infrared camera smile.gif

As for my Osmi I still haven't decided on what videocard to go with so it sits unfortunately alone while I figure that out. I ended up ordering a MSI 390 + SilverStone FTZ01B case for my 1440P Freesync fix.

So now I'm free to choose a smaller card like the 4GB 960 but the 970's are so much faster it's hard for me to pull the trigger given the price difference isn't that great biggrin.gif

Do you know if the the Asus ITX cards have software voltage control?
Hmm,

Check out the power consumption differences between the 960 and 970 on this review:

http://www.techspot.com/review/1075-best-graphics-cards-2015/page6.html

That's a lot bigger than I thought but I'm guessing the extra 2GB of VRAM may make up some of that difference. However if the 970 can be undervolted / underclocked / powertuned it should still outperform the 960 by a considerable margin and maybe close the power consumption gap.
