Windows 10 - Safe to Upgrade?

Thread Starter
I'm building a new PC soon and have been wrestling with sticking to my tried and true Windows 7 or taking the leap and upgrading to Windows 10. When Windows 8 released, I upgraded and regretted it more than anything else I've done PC related. Everything was buggy & cumbersome and I ended up having to reset everything and go back to Windows 7. It was a giant PITA. I understand that Windows 10 seems leaps and bounds above Windows 8 but I'd still like some input on what you guys think of 10 so far, especially those switching from 7 to 10. Would you guys recommend sticking to Windows 7 or upgrading to Windows 10? Does Windows 10 have any issues with games or programs that were released before it was created?

Thanks for the help!

Most problems after a Windows 10 upgrade stem from drivers and previously installed applications, most of which can be resolved by removing and re-installing the affected items, sometimes an OS rollback is necessary to first remove the offending items, then upgrade, then re-install

If you are planning on installing fresh, do it. There isn't much that doesn't work with Windows 10.

Thanks for the reply. I truly appreciate it.

I agree with it being a new system that a fresh install seems far less risky. I just wanted to be sure there weren't any huge issues with it as there were with Windows 8. I'm excited to try Windows 10.

I read that they had a significant patch/update scheduled for some time this month to fix any existing bugs and issues with the OS. Has that been released yet? I can't seem to find any concrete information on it.

Thanks again.

I have tested Windows 10 only on my virtual machines. Look good but personally I'm planning to wait for November when Microsoft plans to release 'service pack 2' (Threshold 2) before I install it on my devices I use daily.
And I'm telling this to all my clients. Windows 10 is not going anywhere and I can wait for a bit more until they fix initial bugs.

I built a new PC about 3 weeks ago with a new copy of Windows 10, and have had quite a few issues with it. I had problems with Chrome, Kaspersky, NVida drivers and Blue Screens of Death. I had to also reformat the entire system once when I couldn't get around some nasty BSODs. Chrome was vitually unusable in Windows 10 with Kaspersky active as my anti virus, which meant I had to use Microsoft Edge as my web browser (blech), until Kaspersky was able to patch a fix in about a week ago.

All of this has been due to incompatabilities and difficulties with Windows 10. I will say that the last week or so, things have been settling down and seem to be much smoother. But, I have spent literally 25-30 hours in the last few weeks troubleshooting issues which in the end, all turned out to be due to Windows 10. Had I known that it was going to be headache after headache like this, I would have gone with Windows 8.

The "Threshold 2" update will drop sometime mid-november and they'll release a new Windows 10 ISO image with the new build.
I'd recommend waiting for the new ISO and do a clean install, unless you want to do the move sooner.

Personally I've considered Window 10 to be fantastic so far, just not ready for "production" yet.
But, from what I've seen from the Insider previews of Threshold 2, it'll be pretty close when the new update/service-pack drops.
