5970 = 7950/gtx 950 performace

you can get the 950 for around $130 and it would use less then half the power

http://gpuboss.com/gpus/Radeon-HD-7950-Boost-vs-Radeon-HD-5970. the 5970 is a way older technology. seriously the 7950 is basically on par with it and a good deal easier on power and will run newer titles better. the 5000 series is just way old, weve already seen the r9 300 series cards drop and before that the r9 200 series and then the 7000 series and the 6000 series even. op if you end up moving to a 1080p display and decide to get a wild hair and play newer games like crisis 3 you will end up wishing you had better then the 5970.

saw three 6990s in the market (with blocks!) for under $200, 2gb per core vs 1gb per core on the 5970. You can probably find a used 290 for that money, and would be much, much better imho.
