It's overclocked i5 (highest possible single-thread) with a single GPU, in CPU-bound situations. There are lots of games out there which are CPU bound and that's where Nvidia does quite well, rather than AMD. Cyro already said it was a niche, but it's an important niche nonetheless. Starcraft 2, LoL, HoTS, WoW, etc. They're all CPU-bound games, and graphically light games. In those sorts of games, drivers are pretty important and AMD drivers simply aren't as good. They haven't been good for a while, that's what's being said. Churning out ridiculously high FPS with super low frame-times is the name of the game, that's what gives a nice gaming experience (especially for competitive multiplayer games). It's a niche, yes, it's been said. But that doesn't make it uninteresting.

I personally don't care for crossfire or SLI solutions (messy, hot, cost-inefficient solutions) either tbh. That said, I absolutely adore my 7970, it's doing everything I need it to, overclocks pretty well, doesn't run too hot. Regardless, I know that a GTX 760 would do better than my 7970 in CPU bound games.

I don't think it's an issue which is big enough for AMD to worry about (it's a niche after all), but the issue is still there. Being sober with CPU resources is a good thing, not something banal.

the 7970 is catching up on the 780. so, the 760 is cathing up on the 780 as well?biggrin.gif

Wouldn't that depend on whether the game was CPU or GPU bound?

I could bench my card vs someone with nvidia but I don't have my 7970 with me right now

On frametimes:

Finally, taking a quick look of GPU frametimes as reported by Ashes internal performance counters, we can see that across all of the mutli-GPU setups there’s a bit of a consistent variance going on. Overall there’s at least a few milliseconds difference between the alternating frames, with the dual NVIDIA setup faring the best while the dual AMD setup fares the worst.

that's 80% scaling on fury x + 980ti..... this is shockingly good stuff. 7970 + 680 - 85% scaling.
I'd like to see how well a 290X does with a 980ti. If buying a used 290X for a tenner could hold me up until big 2017/18 GPUs that'd be great. Come on, 680 + 7970 with 85% scaling, this is too good.

Eh AMD has better CF scaling and framtime or whatever... just anandtech cant go with it.

AFR is just better.

Kinda of taking out of context there.

Otherwise the performance leader, the R9 Fury X + GTX 980 Ti, only averages a bit more variance than the dual NVIDIA setup. At least in this one instance, there’s some evidence to suggest that NVIDIA secondary cards have a harder time supplying frame data to the primary card (regardless of its make), while NVIDIA and AMD primary cards are similar in read performance.

Maybe the HBM is helping, would be interesting to see Fury + GTX980 (or Ti) config tested.

Kinda sad that the iGPU from Intel i7 chip is still useless in DX12 context since it only works with 2 similar GPU horsepower together.

In the mean time if I pair a Geforce with a Radeon GPU for DX12, will Gsync still work? biggrin.gif

We dont have a choice of not wanting a ipgu unless we go into x99 platform.

Either that or amd has turn competitive in the cpu department by any miracles mean

You could also go with xeon processors.
