Upgrade i7-920 CPU on P6X58D Premium MB

Thread Starter
Current Build (no Overclocking)

MB: Asus P6X58D Premium LGA 1366 CPU socket. BIOS - American Megatrends (AMI): 1501

CPU: Intel i7-920 2.66 GHZ quad core 8 thread "Bloomfield" CPU 130W (2005), Intel LGA 1366 Socket, Intel X58 "Tylersburg" Chipset (2007)

CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-U12P SE2 incl 2 fans

RAM: Kingston(3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 1333 (PC3 10600) Triple Channel Kit KVR1333D3N9K3/6G

I do a fair amount of video editing and would like to try some minor tweaking/upgrading in lieu of building a new system at this time. I have never done any CPU overclocking.

1. Can I simply increase the clock speed on my i7-920 CPU without making ANY other Changes? Performance increase?

2. In lieu of (1) above, can I simply drop in a Xeon X560 CPU (or other 6 core Xeon) and increase the clock speed without making ANY other changes? Performance Increase?

3. Should I change or add more RAM?

I am willing to spend not more than $200 if the performance increase is substantial. Otherwise, I will build a Skylake Machine or wait for Broadwell-E.

Thank You for your advice.

1.) Definitely overclock your cpu, here is a guide

At ~4ghz, your performance would not be too far behind any i7 at stock 4770k or below.

I'd double the ram. This kit is a great deal.

An i7 920 @ ~4ghz + 12gb of ram should be enough for basically anything.

I think Xeon is a pretty easy drop, but you may as well OC first (free) and see if that gives you the performance you desire. If not, get a Xeon.

Xeon x5650 is what you are looling for, its basically a core i7 980x, just overclock it to 4- 4.2 ghz with stock vcore and you have a 6 core 12 thread beast cpu, for 65-75 us dollars its the best upgrade you could do
