[M] Europe and Russia to colonize dark side of the Moon with joint space base - Page 2

The "dark" side of the moon would probably be useful for telescopes and whatnot. Get a much better view of the cosmos when the dark side is facing away from the sun.

Those people should grow some food then or something, it's nothing to do with us. We can't force the backwards parts of the world to accept the rule of law, to form stable governments, to reduce their populations to manageable levels, and to stop killing eachother. They have to do these things for themselves. Aid money is a bottomless pit that accomplishes nothing, literally throwing money down a pit. Advancing the common good through stuff like the research accomplished through the space program does far more for everyone the world over then aid money has ever done.

The space program is a big part of how the first world can help the third.

Isn't the dark side hit by all sorts of meteors and other space debris quite frequently?

Im sure that it doesnt get as much radiation from our sun. Probably easier on humans because of that. And also there arent any massive temperature difference which should be easier on construction equipment or whatever they use to build shelters.

The "dark" side still gets a light and dark cycle with the sun, it's only dark to the earth. When it's between the earth and the sun the dark side is in daylight and when it's on the far side of the earth it's in night. So the dark side will still get the temperature cycles brought about by a day and night cycle.

The dark side though is probably the closest place we could put a telescope where it would spend half it's rotation blocking the sun and the earth out of view giving a much clearer view of the cosmos.

That's all relative though. a million* years per meteor strike instead of 2 million sort of thing.

Oh my God, stop being reasonable on the Internet! You're ruining our tumblr mood!

Anyway, i'm kind of excited to see this kind of joint operation.

Yep, with dust everywhere to make sure all the sensitive hartdware malfunctions all the time.

There will always be, why not spend money here and there and not waste on such projects like mars and the moon ... where do you think a lot of the technology that you use today comes from?

The earth needs to cull itself - if i don't know them, then I don't care is a cynical attitude, that I have. Sick of do gooders that do not look at the big picture. You cannot save everybody, nor the backward, that believe in voodoo still and ..... Some countries are so behind or corrupt, and they have had money thrown at them. India is rich but has areas dirtier than my dustbin outside

If anything the 'dark' side of the moon gets more radiation from the sun, because it is never shadowed by the Earth during its 'day' period. Really it should be called the 'light' side of the moon.

And there are massive differences between 'day' and 'night' surface temperatures - between 160°C difference at the poles and a massive 290°C difference at the equator. Given that there is only a trace of atmosphere on the moon there is no 'air' temperature to deal with, but any surface exposed to the sun will have to withstand huge temperature differences.

No mention of how this is a direct violation of the Outer Space Treaty (which all involved bodies have signed on to) and the Moon Treaty (which some EU bodies have signed on to)? Lunar stations effectively require UN approval before they can be built.

So what is almighty UN going to do about it? They have not even been to space.
