I3 heat issues

Stock everything IBM Lenovo ThinkPad with a dual core i3

Few weeks ago I'd get random reboots with plex on debian tearing it up with transcoding crunching.

Now, I can't even make run level 5 before a hard shut down. So ***?

Boot into memtest, pushing all 4 cores, I can't make more then 30 seconds and I hit 90c. Even with the cover off, new as5, yes, carefully placed so enough/not too much.

Fan roars when it gets warm. Everything clean. Just creeps and creeps until too much.

Ideas?

Really. No one has had i3 heat issues?

So it was never overclocked. You cleaned and reapplied new TIM properly. You verified the fan is working and the cooling fins aren't clogged with small pets. But it still overheats and goes into thermal protection? And you have verified the temps?Just clarifying.

What thinkpad is it?

Well I had cpu heat issues, but not i3 heat issues. Anyways putting AS5 into a laptop cpu......isn't good a good idea since it's capactive. I mean laptop CPUs don't have an IHS so that'll be putting the AS5 directly on the die.....

Yes.

Tube of as5 says right in the back side non conductive?!

Not sure what thinkpad model. 2 core i3 m370 2.4 is the headache. It was given to me because someone found it and was passworded win7. DD'ed an image of the drive, gzipped and archived it, put debian on it.

It's been better since first hour. 80-86c full load plex/boinc. I watched some movies through plex and it's doing boinc of what's left in cycle time. I let it cool last night, and letting it crank while at work today.

Still seems warm.

I'm not saying this isn't true, I just found it funny. But as far as overheating goes there's really not much else you can do. It's not like you can install a better cooler here, sorry.

Well, it's functional now. Before it was getting ridiculous.

All I can say is the factory pud gave up the ghost? It was hard as cement. I cleaned the die like a mirror, polished and rubbed the copper plate, decent dab, squashed it down, away I went. Killed almost 10c compared to before and after.

Maybe in a week it'll get better. I don't know. Time will tell.

Just curious if I'm doing something wrong, or i3's run a fuzz on the warm side, especially cheesy laptop setups.

well, got home, laptop off. it got hot sometime today.

pulled the heatsink, wiped it all clean, trying again. it's holding 84-86C on both cores this time. 1st application was far from setup. maybe i should just let it go a week instead of a day and see what my results turn into? or maybe i should give up and just mod this thing so it's not even a laptop anymore, make a stand and put a real heatsink on it? i'm too cheap to buy a real desktop. might as well smoke this free junk.

this is one of the big C's in my book.

computers, cars, and clothes, all throw away expensive dixie cups. outdated or junk the moment they're purchased, as they always make something better everyday, that will still wear out or break!

This is gonna sound like a crazy idea, but how much thermal paste are you using? and as an experiment, what if you try using a tiny bit more?
