I7 3820 overclocking

Thread Starter
So I will start off with saying that I am new to this. I snagged this setup cpu motherboard and a GTX680 from Craigslist for 200 bucks. Sold the gtx 680 on ebay and completely covered the cost for everything.

Okay so I keep running into a little problem. I currently have my 3820 running at 4.0 ghz, I could only get it to that by changing base clock to around 105 ish and leaving multi at 38. Voltage set to auto. If I try to bump any more on the clock or increasing voltage then I do not get a post. The pc restarts and seems to power down and back off again after 4 or so times it will usually boot back into bios.

I am able to disable turbo and change multi to max of 43 and that gets me to windows even with 4.3ghz showing in bios.

However cpuz still shows me at 3.8ghz.

I'm using a GA-X79-UP4, currently 2x4 gb corsair 1600mhz ram, EVGA GTX 770. I'm using a hyper 212 evo cooler and temps seem low at 4.0. Hottest core peaked at 55c under load with prime 95 running for about 30 minutes.

I would be satisfied with 4.3ghz, so that's all I'm after.

The only thing that I could see causing the problem is my psu. I'm using a weak thermaltake tr2 600w which I have used for about 3-4 years.

It has worked fine in the past, but I'm pretty sure I am pushing it to its limit. I plan on upgrading to a nice modular psu at least 750w soon.

Just looking for tips or for confirmation that psu is the issue.

Sorry if this is sloppy I am currently on my phone.
