[Ars] “YouTube Red” offers premium YouTube for $9.99 a month, $12.99 for iOS users

There is a big catch about that $9.99 price: $9.99 will cover Android, desktop, and the mobile Web, but if you want iOS support the price goes up to $12.99/month. Apple takes a 30 percent cut of all subscription revenue on its platform, and Google is passing that cost directly onto the consumer.

Beyond the obviously bad name choice.... (really what were they thinking) this service still feels stupid and unnecessary. Unless they also offer unlimited access to movies ala Netflix I wouldn't bother with this service.

Price seems fair, similar to services like Twitch's Turbo. Problem is, people with Ad blocking extensions and non-mobile devices can still watch same videos without any Ads for FREE wink.gif

You mean re-monetized? I thought adverts on YT already were monetization.

Honestly, I would subscribe so long as there were these things:
  1. For movies which have 7.2 audio, there should be 7.2, for those which have 5.1, there should be 5.1, no downgrades.
  2. When movies are available at 1080p, would be at least 15kbps—20kbps. Higher resolutions would be progressively higher bitrates (obviously).
  3. No advertising.
  4. Movies from across the world.

Sure enough, I don't watch Bollywood or Mexican movies, but I'm not interested in paying money for a service that ignores them. Besides, I still watch movies produced in Europe (who doesn't like “Amelie”, “Taxi”, or “Run, Lola, Run”?)
In short, I expect it to be equivalent to Blu-ray, but without the fuss of physical media.
