DX12 will just bring 290X more life. Yeah power/heat is a problem for a lot of people but i got mine under water since day 1 and was well worth it.
Its not on the top of the charts anymore. It was intended to be a flagship part with the absolute best in performance, and its been bested by the GTX 980 and by AMD's own Fury line.
It still performs well, but since there are bigger and badder fishes out there now its been bumped down to a upper-mid range card. However, since its just a marked down flagship instead of a part designed to fill that role, you still have the disadvantage of it being a tricky to cool with how dense it is (275w/290w/+ in a area of around 440mm2).
Basically, a 290x now is as if if NVIDIA took the 780 and cut its price to $330 instead of making the 970.
