So what to use instead of isopropyl alcohol? - Page 2

I have used brake parts cleaner sprayed on a coffee filter in the past.

I have a bottle of 190-proof grain alcohol for cleaning. Works like a charm and should be available at any liquor store. thumb.gif

If TIM is being stubborn about coming off with alcohol, use a little of girlfriend's or wife's fingernail polish remover .. but don't get it on anything but the IHS and bottom of cooler because the active ingredient is acetone. And do not apply any fingernail polish after cleaning! biggrin.gif

I wouldn't use fingernail polish remover since it usually contains lanolin or some other oily or fatty substance to counteract the skin drying effect of the acetone which will leave a very fine residue behind (also, not all nail polish remover has acetone in it). Straight acetone would be alright, though.

I have access to lab grade Acetone. That wouldn't remove any wording off of the heat spreaders would it? Also, how safe is it if it were to get on the PCB?

Thanks.

Exactly. It's best to use any kind of solvent by applying the solvent sparingly to the cleaning cloth, coffee filter, etc. and wiping it across the face of the IHS instead of trying to apply the solvent directly to the IHS.

It's possible the acetone may take the printing on the IHS off but, then again, it's also possible with other solvents/cleaners.

I use paper towels cut into 2"x2" or 3"x3" squares folded so I can wipe, re-fold wipe, re-fold or throw away. Helps keep pesky TIM from getting onto other things. I swear it has the ability to jump 3-4 feet when it sees something it wants to get onto. tongue.gif
