My graphics card died, need to update, have some questions.

Hello forum,

Before i ask the question here is my current build:

-CPU: Intel® Core™ i7 950

-MB: Asus Rampage II Extreme

-GFX: Sapphire HD 6970 2GB GDDR5 -DEAD-

-RAM: Mushkin Enhanced Stiletto 998946 - 6GB DDR3

-PS: Corsair RM Series™ RM850 Watts.

Here's what happened: The graphics card died, after almost 5 years of heavy usage, it just died.

And now i need to buy a new graphics card, and i was more inclined to nvidia's cards.

My budget is between 400 - 450$, and i need to know the best compatible card that could work properly with this system.

Please, help me, as i haven't upgraded nor kept in touch with technology that much in 5 years.

Thank you in advance.

Hmm well it all depends on what games you play...most of the higher end cards (Nvidia - 970, 980) would probably be bottle necked by your CPU and all around that price point. If you do not have the budget to upgrade Mobo, cpu you can always buy a xeon X5660 and OC it to bring new life into your system along with a 980.

Thank you for your reply,

I was actually thinking about getting a reference GTX 970 (eVGA), how many fps would i lose by being bottlenecked? 20fps? 10fps? in general?

Hello there

the GTX 970 will be huge upgrade from 6970 but you need some OC to the cpu ( since you have good board & PSU & assume an aftermarket cpu cooler ) anyway using the 950 at stock will hold you back in some games like GTA V & BF4 & BF3 ..etc

Note : stay away from Reference cooler its bad in term of noise & temp.. the best 970 card from EVGA the SSC or FTW +

While I agree with the posters above about the 970, I'd rather propose the R9 390 or a used R9 290x which can be had for ~$250 and trade blows and win most games at any given resolutions.

Definitely agree with you on this...but since he did say Nvidia cards....if you have a close to $500 budget if you go AMD you can always get a r9 295x2 smile.gif

Btw, here if you were to upgrade your CPU i would go for a x5660 here are some benches one of the members did here on OCN

http://www.overclock.net/t/1461359/official-xeon-x5660-x58-review-discussion-and-xeon-l5639-benchmarks-inside

http://www.overclock-and-game.com/hardware/computer-tech-reviews/28-x5660-review

From the OC benches they get close to 3930k levels thumb.gif

Thank you all for the replies!

I won't be upgrading my computer in the next...maybe well..X years...i'll most likely start working since i'm finishing university this year, and won't have more time for games...although it has been a hell of a fun ride with this machine smile.gif...

The only thing i'll need now is the graphics card to blast through this year...

I will consider all your answers!

Thank you smile.gif
