Definitely unlocked, do not have to use ECC memory, and xmp profiles on the board worked as much as they normally do (had to do some manual input values but thats nothing new). I am sitting on a 4.4 oc, cache of 3.6, and memory at 3200mhz. I have not really pushed the cache at all, just a number I settled on.

Wow you can do 3200MHz with your DDR4 RAM? So intel spec limit 2133MHz DDR4 for E5-1660 V3 doesn't matter??

I've just started looking into using Xeon CPUs on non-server mobos. Is there any reference list/sites that will show what Xeon CPUs are supported? Specifically I'm interested in the Asrock X99 Taichi board, does anyone know if that will support the Xeon CPUs? I've see some Xeon E5-2686v3 18-core that's going for only $600. If that combo will work it would be pretty sweet. Thanks in advance.

I guess that board doesn't support E5-2686 V3 base on this http://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/X99%20Taichi/#CPU
But you can go with E5-2687W V3 (M0), E-2687W V3(M1), E5-2687W V4(M0), E5-2685 V3(M1) or else on that list.

Geekbench for 2686v3 & Taichi

The CPUID is more important than the Brandstring for compatibility. If you have CPUID 306f2 then that should be good especially if you want more all core performance. While 306f1 and 306f0 should be supported, their performance may be more limited.

Thanks for the info. I rather not risk it then, it seems like I can find some E5-2683 v3 ES on eBay for pretty cheap (14 cores is still very nice). As I understand it, the ES and QS models have unlocked multiplier therefore it's overclockable right? What's the usual overclocking range for these chips? I've seem some people hit 5ghz, but I don't know if that's an outlier.

No unlocked multi that I'm aware of but you may find turbo is much lower than production CPU's
post #37 of 47
Oh, that's too bad. From what I've read regarding the Asrock X99 Taichi, it has different BCLK ratios, so I should be able to use either 133 or 167 BCLK, that should still be pretty decent overclock. Do you have any experience with BCLK overclocking on the Xeon CPUs? As you can see from my sig rig, I have a 2600K, so I only oc'd by mutli. Thanks.

To use bclk straps the CPU needs to support it. I'm not aware of any E5-26xx v3/v4 supporting bclk straps.

Thanks for the info. Looks like I'll have to look into the 16xx series. I wanted a newer arch, but oh well.
