You're missing Quake 3.

I am in 100% belief that if this was put out by another company under a different name and without the throwbacks to the original, this game would not be receiving the publicity or hype that it has.
Here is a list of the most recent games id has developed, tell me if you dont see an issue here:

Quake 3 1999 - A great game, no qualms.
Doom 3 2004 - Mediocre game held up by the ip and graphics
Quake Live 2010 - Basically a browser version of quake 3
Rage 2011 - Game was poor, huge graphical issue, story was lacking and had no ip to fall back on.
Doom 3 BFG 2012 - basically a remake with very few fixes/updates/etc
Doom 2016 - ???

The last great game id made was back in 1999. Now to be clear, id made GREAT games from 1990-1999, but they have totally fallen off the wagon and people are naive if they think the 2016 Doom is going to be a great game. It's not.
Quake 4...Rage.....Wolfenstein...Doom 3 + Doom ROE = All have average ratings above 80% So think before you say "their last good game came out in 1999"
Change that to..."Their last EPIC game came out in 1999" thumb.gif

EDIT:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Id_Software#Quake Apparently ID didn't even make Quake IV (which makes sense to why it's multiplayer was horrible)

No offense but he sounds a bit butthurt over this anyway.

Doom 3 a medicore game? For you, sure. That doesnt mean everyone thinks like that. Same goes for the new Doom, you can tell the future? NICE!

Nobody can tell the future, but we can speculate based off of what we know. Right now, I know that locked look speed and snap to zero movement indicates that the bulk of the gameplay we've seen was played with a controller. The overall speed of the game is quite slow, much closer to Call of Duty than most id titles in the past, and other things from that franchise seem to have crept in as well, like what appears to be instant-kill melee attacks (that may or may not leave you vulnerable during the long animation), and canned animations you cannot cancel out of or shoot during for vaulting over obstacles.

It is alpha, and things are obviously subject to change, but given what we've seen, I'll remain skeptical (and yet hopeful) of this game.

Being skeptical is one thing (And a good thing mostly) but he was not.

I personally really enjoyed Doom 3...So I have high hopes for Doom 4 (the gameplay so far looks great)
I'm not expecting a 90+ rating, but I am expecting an 80/100 game.
I hope this pans out to be at least a 'decent' game. I'll never forget the hours spent enjoying Doom in 1993 played on MS-DOS. biggrin.gif
Topic related, not a meme in news section! (Click to show)

Fingers crossed it's developed as a PC game first that's ported to other devices secondary. Since its in Alpha we'll have to wait to pass judgement. It dosent look to be and understandably that might be a deal breaker for some. Let's also respect those that don't mind or feel the same way as long as it has good game play.

I think the general consensus online was yeah...pretty mediocre.

  • 4 player multiplayer......REALLY?
  • No flashlight mounted weapons.......REALLY?
  • Outdated mechanics......you had to change "weapons" to get to your flashlight, your fists for melee, or even grenades. This is 3 years after Halo CE came out which gave the player a much broader set of functionality. Similar to Resident Evil 5 where they coughed up terrible control/design choices to "it makes the combat more intense..."

Just a few quibbles I remember having with the game.

Not to sound like an ass or anything but they clearly state the purpose of the alpha test on their website and when you sign up:
Quote:
The DOOM MP Closed Alpha is a series of development-driven tests designed to stress test the game’s dedicated server infrastructure in a real-world end user environment.

If taken literally, this basically means the gameplay experienced is no indication of what it will be like for the beta tests or final product. I think it's safer to reserve judgment of the gameplay experience probably until the open beta. Just saying, lol.

So everything they've developed is not indicative of their end result? At this point, the "DNA" of the game is there. We've had Alphas before...unless something arises and they delay the game (doubtful), what you see is what you get.
