GTX 960 Sli and my I7 950 @ Stock. Simple question.

Thread Starter
Hello forum,

I decided i wanted to buy 2x GTX 960 Reference cards.

My monitor is 1440x900 19" 2ms (No Full HD, or any HD stuff, it has more than 5 years), won't upgrade it, best choice i've made 5 years ago.

And my cpu, right now is at stock (3.06ghz), because i can't overclock it, no matter what i try.

With this setup will there be any bottleneck? If yes, how many fps do i lose? Like 20fps+? 10fps?, I don't understand this bottleneck thing.

Again, whatever oc i try to do on my i7 950, it just crashes, even if i put at 3.2ghz, or 3.3ghz...

Thank you.

Thank you for the suggestion. I'll stick to 2 GTX 960s.

Will there be bottlenecks?

Thank you.

2x 960 reference? headscratch.gif

At 1440x900, you probably aren't going to max out a single 960, much less two.

Is there a reason you want 2 960's? I would suggest a single 390 or 970.Either one of those will offer much better game play and smoothness.

Thank you all for the information!

I'm assuming my cpu can handle both GTX 960s/ 1 GTX 970/ 1 R9 390?

Thank you.

Thank you...the reason for this is because i really can't overclock my i7 950...

i tried everything, even with 1.38vcore...

Oh well... i used to have this at 4.5ghz, but somewhere in the past i put the defaults and never oced again...now i cannot seem to oc it.

I'll just stick to 3.2ghz (when Turbo boost is on)...

there is almost zero reasoning to buy two 960's, especially when playing at 900p.

one gtx 970 is good enough to nearly max anything at 1080p.

i would recommend one 970 or one 960. 960 if you really want to keep the 900p, or a 970 if you plan to upgrade to 1080p in the future. either choice would still be fine for 1080p, just depends on what games you play and how much you want to crank the settings..

your cpu really isn't that much of a bottle neck. i would try and keep looking to see why you aren't able to OC it. but even still, at 900p, its going to be very hard to have a cpu bottleneck until you hit frames way past what the monitor can even display..

It may hold back a 970 by a tiny bit, my X5670 @ 3.2GHz (same amount of IPC) was limiting my 780 Ti @ 1231MHz by a little in some more cpu demanding games (Killing Floor 2), that said it was still above 60fps @ 2560x1080.
