I recovered an old PC, few ideas in mind but how to proceed ? Advices needed.

Hi guys, i recovered an old PC with parts lying around and i've few ideas in mind, here is the specs of the beast :

Motherboard : MCP61M-HM REV 1.0
CPU : AMD Athlon 64 X2 (5000+ if i recall correctly)
RAM : 3GB (Can go up to 8GB 4x2GB)
GPU : Nvidia 9300GE 256Mb
SATA : 4 Ports

Full list here : http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c00906137

I thought that it could became a pretty good Home purpose pc.

The final goal of this is :
- That he can replace my crappy Internet provider's router. (I've looked some things about Pfsense, but i don't know if this OS can do everything i wish to be done)
- I wish to make this pc a NAS as well with PPTP VPN support

As in France we have a law that track your internet (Bittorent) trafic and make you pay a ticket if you abuse and end your internet subscription and you cannot subscribe to any internet providers anymore..

I download a lot via my seedbox then transfer everything via FTP to my computer (FTP communication is not controlled) i'm pretty secure for now.

But those seedbox aren't so good as i would. So a VPN+NAS on my build is important.

This multi-purpose PC will be placed in my network and can be accessible by all the equipement i own :

- A DLNA TV in the living room (will be connected via ethernet.)
- My Parents PC in the living room (connected via ethernet)
- My PC (connected via PLC)

That's it guys, i hope i can acomplish this project with you. See you ! thumb.gif

I'm confused. Are you looking to turn this PC into a router, a NAS or both? If both, you'd have to run some type of hypervisor (VMware for example) and that CPU & RAM probably won't cut it.

I would like to do both with it. The priority however is to create a VPN network to download anonymously.

And a nas

I'm aware of the fact that my components are quite old.. I just wanted to dive into this kind of Project wink.gif

What VPN provider do you use or have you not chosen one yet? I personally use AirVPN and have it setup as an interface on pfSense and it works quite well. However some providers are more difficult to configure.

I have No ideas i'll take any VPN as soon as it do the job well without too much lost bandwidth (my internet speed is only 300kb/s ~ i haven't fiber optic yet.. )

Hello,

Have you ever thought about going Usenet over BitTorrent? With this setup, you can:

A: Download everything over SSL with secured ports.
B Use the money instead on something that can give you full bandwidth AND gives you access to years of information

I'll admit I still run a VPN, mostly for privacy sake, not necessarily for Usenet.

I recommend Private Internet Access cause it does offer DNS leak protection and I am running AES 256 bit encryption. Again, this is more for privacy sake then anything else, but it does offer a layer of being anonymous.

Note: Take this reply for what it is, an alternate means of getting legal information. However you plan on using Usenet will be up to your discretion. Want to make this note, just so that everyone knows that this doesn't imply anything illegal.

Edit: If you would like more information on my setup, please PM me.

I have 0 infos about Usenet and i don't know how SSL works (exept the fact that it evolves ports.) so yeah i'm interested in your setup, as i said i want full privacy, anonymously downloading and security over my network. No matter which way i use as soon as the goal is reached.

The only thing is that i don't know if this law have access to SSL security, i mean everywhere i see that we can protect ourselves by Seedboxes and VPN but there is No SSL thing...
