Upgrade to 970 or 980 (from 670 Sig2) for FO4

Thread Starter
Currently I have an EVGA 670 Sig2 (2GB). I run dual 1920x1200 monitors (this setup works well for my work), so if I game it would be on a single 1920x1200.

I haven't gamed for quite a while (played some Skyrim previously with HD texture packs). I am looking forward to Fallout 4. I'm "worried" (first world problems) that I won't be able to run FO4 at highest settings (even on a 1920x1200 monitor). The thing that has me worried is the recommended 3GB VRAM requirement for the game. I'm pretty certain I'm going to upgrade in the next week or so. What I'm not sure about is will the 970 do the job (given that its equivalent-ish to a 780 which is the recommended spec). or should I go for the 980. Given my resolution being >1080p but <<1440p, what are your opinions on 970 vs 980 in this context?

Cheers

I would suggest to go with the 970. Performance difference between the 2 is at max of ~5-10% but the 980's are significantly expensive (~30%) which is not worth the performance jump. Are you specifically looking for Nvidia only or are you fine with an AMD card as well as buying a used one then R9 290 (used) can be had for ~ to $200 but competes well with the 970, so you'd be getting the most bang for your buck out of that card. Besides, you'd be enjoying a max of 6-8months before Nvidia launches its next lne of Pascal which are better architecturally as well as smaller node, so the performance jump is going to be huge even on mid range chips.

I'm somewhat biased to Nvidia, partly because I like EVGA ... no real rational reason actually. I usually buy new and sell my old card on ebay or the forum here. Pascal would be awesome but I can't wait that long, I need my FO4 now smile.gif

I do like the idea of saving on the 970 (vs the 980), but I also don't want to be "marginal" on performance (given that "recommended" for FO4 is a 3GB 780), and that's why I'm posting the question. Thanks for the feedback!

I concur about the 290. If you don't feel comfortable with a used card though perhaps a 390? I think it's cheaper than the 970 right now and is just a touch faster. I also don't believe the 980 is worth it. It's not much faster but a heck of a lot more expensive. The 970 is also around the 780ti level from my recollection.

I would also recommend that you wait until the game releases. Maybe your 670 will surprise you.

I ran a GTX 970 from Oct 2014 until Sept of 2015 and it is a sweet graphics card, ran everything at max settings with 2 monitors.
it's a Gigabyte G1 Gaming GTX 970. in Sept I was able to get the best deal on the planet for a GTX 980 and I didn't think the performance gain would be that big but
I was wrong. I should have bought it instead of the 970 but everyone said the performance difference of the 2 gpu's wasn't that big, but it is.
make sure you research the vram issue with the 970 as you really only get 3.5gb and not a full 4gb as 500mb is reserved for only when needed and if you run anything other than a 60hz 1920 x 1080 monitor you can have issues.
my new 980

my 970, which I still have.

I agree with above. Wait until game comes out. Your current card may indeed surprise you. I upgraded from a Sapphire R9 380 DUAL X O/C 2 GB to a Gigabyte GTX 970 G1 Gaming 2 weeks ago ONLY because I was considering a 3 monitor surround 1080p setup. It IS a sweet card but had no problems running BF4 on ULTRA settings with 2 1080p monitors with R9 380. If I had done a little more research I probably would have went with 4 GB Nitro version:
Sapphire Radeon NITRO R9 380 4GB GDDR5 DL-DVI-I / DL-DVI-D / HDMI / DP Dual-X OC (UEFI) PC... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00ZGL8D5M/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_ypnlwb7QXCS9J

Which is currently $209.00. An incredible value considering I paid $358.00 for my 970.

970 or 980 Ti is the way to go, I think 980 needs a price cut. Too expensive for what you get. 980 Ti is not much more, but much faster.

Well, then you can up the resolution scale and get much better IQ..?
Also, Fallout 4 will probably favor Nvidia (Gameworks confirmed), so would be stupid to buy an AMD card to play Fallout 4..
Also look at requirements. 550 Ti or 7870... 550 Ti is much slower than 7870, but in Fallout 4 they are even? Nvidia title.

The 290 is definitely quite a good deal - I'm going to research it. You guys have given me a lot of food food for thought. Thanks.

Yeah, just saw that thread too (about GW) - so yes, will be sticking with Nvidia for sure now. I think after reflecting upon all this, I'm going to wait and see if my 670 cuts it before committing, but I reserve the right to impulse buy at any moment biggrin.gif

If it's within your budget the choice is easy. Go with the GTX 970.
