Last PSN update bricked my PS4 and SONY wants $149 to repair

The firmware updated bricked my system last night. Everything was working perfectly fine for years until I updated. I just contacted SONY chat CSR and they told me to pound sand unless I pay $149 service fee.

I then asked to speak with the CSR's supervisor and was put on with Supervisor "Regina." Regina refused to provide me with her location and full name. She would only tell me that she was the supervisor from the chat support department. She told me that since my PS4 was outside of the warranty period I would have to pay $149 for repair. I explained the situation and she said that she was not empowered to wave the $149 fee and would not do anything to resolve the situation. I asked Regina to put me in touch with her supervisor and she said, "My supervisor is not staffed to take chats Andrew. Do you have any other question related with a different matter today?"

I asked for an American CSR representative / Supervisor and "Regina" told me, "There's no direct extension for a representative in the US, if you want to you may initiate a new chat and ask if they are located in the US."

I kept pressing her to put me in touch with her supervisor or a united states representative and she disconnected the chat.

So I contacted the chat again, and immediately asked for a united states representative and this is what agent Alejandra said "Unfortunately I cant transfer the chat but I am more than glad to help you." I explained the situation and was then put on the same merry go round of no help or else you pay $149 scam.

This is DISGUSTING! Total SCAM! Unbelievable SONY!!!!

Where do I sign up for the class action lawsuit?

And I am not alone:

I can get into safe mode and the controller works perfectly fine connected via usb that way. I have tried all of the options in safe mode, but nothing works. When I go to boot the ps4 it tells me to connect a ps4 controller and press PS button....but when I connect the controller it does not recognize it :-(

If you can go to safe mode then its probably not bricked, rltry a different usb cable and try a different controller?

If you are sure that it's bricked, contact the chat support again, go through the same process, record the chat conversation, then go to the small claims court, the fee is only around 30 bucks.

After reading the link the OP provided on this topic, I'm shocked there isn't some sort of online petition being started
demanding Sony rectify this issue.

Seems like it's affected quite a lot of customers...

It's easy, and you will definitely win it 120%, done it myself twice. Also print out the link that you provided to further prove your claims.

Sony might be in the clear if this was an optional update and gave warnings as to its instability... But a forced update? They just gave some people no choice but to brick their consoles. I feel like it would be in their best interest to get these bricked consoles in asap and see what happened so they can fix it before it turns into a massive wide scale recall.
Sorry AMD
