Will a graphics card draw power without being plugged into the PSU

Thread Starter
Hey guys,

I just bought a second graphics card (Sapphire R9 280X Vapor-X Tri-X) but I only have a 750 watt EVGA SuperNOVA G2 PSU, so I am going to buy a 1000 watt (for silence rather than efficiency). I just wondered if I were to put it in the PCI slot ready for when I can plug it into the new PSU, if it will try to draw power from the PCI slot and draw too much power from my motherboard.

Thanks!

I'm not sure on the drawing too much power from the pcie slot, but I am pretty sure the EVGA 750 will run the 2 gpu's. I could be wrong but I don't think you will need a 1000w.
but there are experts here on OCN that can confirm this.

The max each of those cards will pull is around 250w stock. source. You dont mention what kind of CPU you are running and if it is overclocked, but I doubt it pulls 250W under load, more likely its not even half that. You'll be fine plugging it in for now, just don't run a gpu stressing program at the same time you are running a cpu stressing program, and even then you probably wont even hit 650W.

750w should be plenty for two R9-280x's as long as you are not overvolting them.

I think he means he wants not to overload the PSU to run the PSU in fanless mode, which is a nice idea (cause I run my rig like this too tongue.gif ) A system with two 280Xs will probably pull around 50% of that PSU's capabilities.

I don't think a GPU will power if not directly plugged into the PSU. There is only a handful of GPUs that can do that like some GTX 750Ti. And if you somehow get the GPU to run 100% without plugging it into the PSU, you'd probably fry the mobo. Like the Bitcoin mobos, they had 4-pin molex connections for more power.

full system power for 280X Xfire when running furmark is 623 watts from the wall

the seasonic 1K plat used in that rig will have ~91% efficiency at that load for 567 watts

since furmark sucks up power like nothing else you may have a little wiggle room depending on what else is in your rig. still would be prudent to get a 1K PSU but you might not have any worries until you find a good one at a reasonable price or on sale.

it's best to take the card out, there might be some system instability and such who really knows, I've never seen sb run a ghost card in the rig.
and one should not run Furmark. This is a serious warning biggrin.gif Why would sb deliberately heat up the card like this ? Why don't he just put in the oven straight away.

The system shouldn't even post if one of your GPUs doesn't have the power connectors plugged in.

So the answer is no you can't run it without it being plugged into the PSU.

Also a 750w G2 is plenty for that setup. Before you go buying a new PSU at least try it out and see if the noise is acceptable
