Have a fx 8150
gigabyte 990fxa ud7 (going bad post issues)
16 gb ddr3 ballistix
Evga 680 classified 4gb
corsair 850i psu

but i am switching to
5960x (bit overkill)
Asus ROG Rampage v extreme
64 gskill ddr4 2400
SLI 980 ti classified 6Gb

And going from the 1200v3 case to 900D for watercooling my decision mostly on the intent to overclock and watercool and run the cpu 4.0 to 4.5.
i'd love tips and any help

DDR3 2133 is faster than DDR4 2400.

Not with the quad channel its around 2400 - 2666 that ddr 4 even at 16 cas is not noticable or slightly faster.

4960K is also quad channel. You'll need %50 faster frequencies to overcome the cas barrier, imo.

ill have to look deeper in to it but cas15 ddr4 is matching ddr3 so i know there is a gap but what i have seen its pretty deceiving.

Im personally looking at a similar upgrade but im holding out untill DDR4 is a more obvious upgrade, we see these slightly faster speeds every new generation of hardware but then in time they will far exceed the first generation speeds. Early adopters pay for bragging rights, which if you have the cash to do so then happy times I have been there and done that... but now with a family im more price concious than ever. Id be tempted to say get the GPU upgrade and play games as happily as you can with what you have for another year (get a cheap used mobo if yours does finally give up on you) and then upgrade the board, cpu and ram thats what im doing. I am milking my sandy bridge i5 system i built in 2011/12 for another 18 months if I can. rolleyes.gif

I would wait but amd 9xxx make my skin crawl. Its fine but pushing 220w through a cpu is showing desperation not brilliant hardware. Its like saying we get it we cant keep up. So new mobo means money to fix a system i am basicly at the wall with. Better to rip the bandage off and build a new long time system new advances are always coming down the pipe waiting is a pointless endevour ultimately imo could have been better timed but meh. So ill have a pretty sw battle field and fallout 4 even if it is game works
post #8 of 9
Yer i know what you mean.. i had a friend sell his amd 9xxx system to build a devils canyon system after just a couple of months he was just not getting the performance he had hoped for. Also like you say new advances are coming all the time but we just have to make do with and be happy with the best you can afford/get at the time. I wanted to hold out for the new HBM2 graphics cards but i knew i needed something better than the r7 260x to play fallout4 in all its glory so i was 'forced' into that upgrade in effect.

On the otherside if you choose carefully and time it right there are some good deals out there, with so many refreshes of intels chips which give minimal advances in the actual game performance in each new generation you could land a bargain. after all im using the same motherboard, ram and powersupply i built this system with in 2011 all i have done is upgrade the cpu to a K series chip (2500k) and overclocked it to 4.2Ghz and i can still keep my r9 390x pumping at 1440p and above in most games.
