R9 290x CF Horrible Performance? - Page 8

tomy yes I have CF enabled even with programs that dont have a profile and no frame limit has been set, I just have both of my cards in my rig now and am using them in single card mode with a monitor connected to each one until I get a new PSU of my own.

and digg I am using 3Dmarks API overhead test to test my draw calls, also its interesting that my 970 gets way more draw calls than my 290x but my 290x gets better performance when the two are at stock clock, overclocked is a different story though but sadly I cant get my 970 to stay at a stable overclock without artifacting so 290x it is thumb.gif

I was waiting to hear if the PSU resolved this. My gut says it's still related to 16x/4x CF. Usually this results in wildly inconsistent framerates and perhaps AMD's framepacing fixes are reducing the performance of the 16x card to match the abilities of the 4x card.

I'm not sure, even with framepacing disabled the issue still persists, I think what I will do is when I get my new PSU I will get water cooling as well for everything (CPU and 290x's) and then overclock my CPU because I have noticed as I increase my CPU clock the issue becomes well less and less of an issue, on the topic of 4x slot I really dont think its that big of an issue, I have tried using it alone with my 970 since it shows bus utilization in GPU-z and it never goes above 80% usage and the performance difference is probably only around 2%-3%. Same with the 290x with it actually seeing less of a hit from the 4x bus.

Are you running your cpu at stock??? If so get it up to 4..6ghz stat!

sell those and get a 980ti, here, problem solved, no need to thank me. you'll also avoid house fire from running all this on cx750.

So final update here, its all fixed and it was weird what fixed it
My CCC settings I changed to
Texture Filtering: High Quality
Surface Optimization: off
Vsync: off unless specified
Triple Buffering: off
Tessalation: use application settings
Frame Pacing: off

and boom graphic score in 3dmark of over 20000

In a perfect world, two units would yield two times the power, but in the tech world you really get anywhere from 1.9x to 1.1x the performance.

Your CPU also only has 16 PCI-E lanes, so when you run 1 card, it runs at x16. When you run two cards, each one gets 8x lanes instead. It very well could be that you are reaching the limits. Also, keep in mind that firestrike is an all-round test, so your CPU, RAM, or Motherboard could be causing bottlenecks.

You should see a substantial increase in the video performance though. (Probably from 100 FPS to 160FPS, you get the idea).

You just made me think of something. Any chance my little 16gb 1866mhz Dominator RAM could be causing bottlenecks for me? If so, is there a method for diagnosing a RAM bottleneck? I actually just started playing a RAM intensive and cpu intensive alpha game and Im trying to figure this out. Want to hear something else weird with 290x's in Crossfire? I can get both cards to work correctly in Unigine Heaven but not in Valley. And just like the OP I get similar scores in Firestrike.

Id love to know if there is a way to diagnose the RAM bottleneck. Wondering if I should turn the freq down to 1600mhz.

I have 12gb of 1866mhz ram and since I changed my settings in CCC everything works fine, I would suggest changing your settings to what I have mine at now, maybe that will fix it.
