GPU <95 TDP for HD-Plex H5

Thread Starter
I preordered the upcoming H5 case from HD-Plex. original plan was to build a silent HTPC based around Openelec to replace my aging 2010 Mac Mini. Now I want to build a computer a dual boot system for Openelec and Windows for gaming. I thought about building two separate computers, but doing that feels like it would end up being too pricey. Also I don't think I have room for another computer. The form factor, along with the fanless operation is why I chose the case.

The optional passive GPU heatsink is rated for 95 TDP. So things seem pretty straight forward. I'm capped at the GTX 950. I can probably live with that. It will run better than my PS4, and be silent. When the new Pascal GPUs come out I can upgrade to one of those, since they are supposed to be much more energy efficient. My only question is, could I get better performance from say an underclocked 960 or 970? I will be gaming on a 1080p 50in Kuro Elite, so I don't need to worry about 1440p or 4k.

For CPU I'm leaning towards the i7-6700K, since its under 95 TDP, won't be a bottleneck to the GPU, and should do a good job with Dolphin.

I am open to any and all suggestions. That is why I am here.

Assuming Openelec will be for the "MediaPC" side of things, why not just use Windwos? Why dual boot?

The number one reason is stability. While I have never ran OE before, reports are that Kodi is more stable under it. The only downside I can see would be my inability to Raid 0 two M.2 cards together for use as my boot drive, as they must be formatted differently for the two systems.

This is just my experience, but I have been running KODI for the past two months with Windows 7 on MrDVR (in sig) plus several other PC's and devices, including a Pi 2 with Openelec. Here are my findings.

  • Various Laptops and PC's running Win7, runs perfect, no issues.
  • Android 10.1 Tablet, too old, wont run.
  • Android 12.2 Tablet, runs perfect, occasional crashes to home screen
  • Raspberry Pi 2 with Openelec, intermittent functionality until total failure. It works here an there until it just doesn't work at all. It even messes up the routing table some how and I have to reset the router because all devices loose internet connectivity until I do. Even happens on my neighbors network, wifi and wired. Not sure if it is the Pi doing this, or Openelec. I'm pretty new to both, but this was a KODI pre-built, pre-loaded Pi from Amazon with good ratings, didn't have to know much.

TLDR: Windows 7 has been the most stable and easy platform to use for me so far running KODI. That being said, I do only use it to stream from the internet. I've yet to delve into LAN media sharing.

I may actually just run Kodi in Windows. It does have better periferals support. My main conundrum is still what video card to run. Allong with an optional passive GPU cooler for cards with a TDP under 95 it can also accommodate GPUs with blowers. Why don't they make any that turn off their fans when they aren't needed. If I go that route I'm most interested in the GTX 980 as I have read the reference cooler is quiet for a blower.
There are cards that turn off the fans at low load.
I have an Asus sitrix 970 and the fans are silent on the desktop, unfortunately it's also massive so I doubt it will fit in your case

I would definitely go with a "better" card and underclock it if you can afford it.

I ended up buying a GTX 970 with the reference cooler. It actually came in today. Now I am just waiting for... just about every other part. Hopefully everything I ordered will arrive in the next few days. My biggest concern is the ram. I bought 16gb of Crucial Ballistix Sport LT off of amazon, but it was backordered, and I haven't received an expected delivery date yet.
