Asus Xonar DGX PCI-e slot query

Hello

I was thinking about getting the Asus Xonar DGX 5.1 to replace my old motherboard's (Gigabyte X58A-UD3R v2) Realtek ALC889 which is used mainly with headphones (steelseries syberia v2) and games. This motherboard is showing its age but i want to hold it for a while more, atleast until Zen comes out. smile.gif

Although this motherboard has 2 (1 usable PCIEX1_2) X1 and a PCI slot, i want to install the Xonar on the last slot at the bottom (PCIEX8_2) so it gives my GFX (R9 290x) room for heat disipation and cooling.

a pic to illustrate my query:

I asked Gigabyte about this but their answer wasn't... what i was expecting.

Could this slot layout somehow affect my (GFX) performance or it should be fine?

thanks

I'm not particularly familiar with your board but there is a rule of thumb for using a full length pcie x8/x16 port for a pcie 1.0 sound card. The x16 slots including the one you plug your graphics into will most likely go from x16 to x8 if you plug the sound card into any of the full length pcie x16 or x8 slots on this board. This will only have the smallest effect on your games. So small infact you probably won't notice, its something like 2-3fps loss. You can see this change if you download and use http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/2524/techpowerup-gpu-z-v0-8-5/ it will show you the bus interface currently being used by your card next to the value is a question mark button that will test the bus and tell you if its x16 or x8 and what version of pcie is being run ie 2.0 or 1.1 etc.
If you want to avoid any minor loss and it is minor in fps plug the soundcard into one of your pcie 1.0 slots as these use a seperate lane bus and will not impact on your x16 slots in anyway if you use them. In your photo I can see two straight away above the top full length pcie x16 slot on your mobo. As those slots are above your gpu slots they should have no impact on the gpu cooler.

I suspected the same.
Just thought the chain effect was odd, by using the soundcard in PCIEX8_2 which affects an empty PCIEX16_2 which in turn will affect the PCIEX16_1 with a slotted GFX.

With the PCI-E 1x slots, only one of those (PCIEX1_2) can be used with the Xonar due to the X58 chipset heatsink being in the way for the first slot but i don't like the idea of installing the soundcard in the second one due to it being close to the GFX and "trap" heat coming from the back of the card (Hawaii can run a bit hot).

The PCI slot would work better but still a bit too close for my liking for airflow reasons.

I already use GPU-Z to check the bus - idle/light desktop usage it sits @ x16 1.1 and in games goes to x16 2.0 .
I'm probably overthinking this given the old system but I guess i need to test this configuration myself and see the outcome. smile.gif

Thanks for the reply though.

Your very welcome. I have a audigy rx plugged into the second pcie x16 on one of my rigs because like you I have a few things to think about with regards to clearances and cooling. TBH I tested it in ungine valley with and without the soundcard on the pcie x16 bus and it made like 2 fps difference 81fps instead of 83fps reckoned my kids could live with that haha gg.

You could always get the Xonar DG - The PCI version of the same card

I wouldn't worry about temperatures, especially since the PCI Express x1 is on the PCB side of the GPU,not on the fan side. I have a R9 280X and a DGX installed on the fan side of the GPU and i don't notice any temperature spike.
